BBC Scotland Operations Trainees
The BBC trainee skills development programme offers the best start for a craft career in the media industry.
BBC Scotland Operations team provide specialist Camera, Audio and Vision engineering skills to programme makers to ensure they achieve high quality output for the national networks, local output and independent programme makers.
Over 18 months we will train and develop you through specialised training and work placements in craft areas.You will be mentored by craft specialists from within BBC Scotland and by the end of the scheme you will have the skills to be proficient in at least two areas of operations.
You will attend a bespoke training course run by the BBC Academy covering all the craft areas we expect you to operate in. You will then undertake a rotation all these areas over a period of six months with the support of your mentors before focusing for the remainder of your contract on your specialist area and a secondary skill.
Your work in sound, across both radio and television, will involve setting microphones, rigging and testing radio microphone systems, building and operating PA systems either as part of programme making or support content, boom operations, mixing content either live to air or for later broadcast. You will be able to select the required communications and sound equipment for audio capture both in the studios and on location that meet production demands.
In Vision Engineering you will work with studio vision systems involving distribution and control of video signals to broadcast requirements. You will line up monitors and cameras for programme use both in the studios and in outside broadcast situations. You will be able to select equipment to build bespoke systems to a productions requirements.
In cameras you will be shooting content under direction that will either be live to air or for recorded programmes. You will operate HD systems cameras in the studios and on outside broadcasts as well as being able to operate a single camera unit.
You will have a rounded skillset that should enable you to secure employment in the broadcast sector either as a member of staff or freelance operator.

You do not require broadcast experience however you should have recently completed a period of study in a broadcast related subject.
You must be able to work flexible hours
You must demonstrate a basic level of skills in cameras, sound or electronic engineering.
