The Azeri Service is part of the Europe Hub of Global News Language Services. We have a small team based in London and in Azerbaijan. The Service produces a multimedia website, bbcazeri.com, which aims to engage an Azeri speaking audience, bringing relevant news focusing on an international, regional and local agenda. It aims to do this in a lively and engaging fashion through multimedia journalism, including interactivity and social media.
We are recruiting a Correspondent to be based in Baku on a 6 month fixed term contract (local terms and conditions apply).
You will report on developments in Azerbaijan and the region, from Baku or other locations if required by Azeri Service management. The Correspondent provides timely, expert and authoritative multimedia news coverage and analysis across the range of BBC News outlets, fully observing the BBC editorial guidelines. You will work as part of the Azeri Service and advise on news topics and events on a regular basis.
You will report on all aspects of political, commercial, economic, social and cultural life in Baku which is lively and interesting and readily understandable by a non-specialist audience. The Correspondent alerts editors to breaking news so you will be ready to file accurate, immediate on the spot reports. You will research, prepare and present interviews, discussions and analysis for video as required. Broadcasting material in Azeri and/or English is required.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be able to communicate fluently in Azeri (written and verbal) and have an excellent command of English. Russian language skills would be desirable. You will have substantial experience as a Reporter/Journalist including reporting assignments abroad and experience of reporting on live and breaking news. Exceptional interviewing skills are crucial for this role along with excellent general knowledge of domestic and international current affairs.
You will have a strong understanding of the politics in Azerbaijan and also the cultural, political and economic factors which play a role in this society. Equally important is being able to come up with innovative and creative approaches to bring the audience to a closer understanding of this region. Your proven ability to generate original stories and special reports is also required. A rigorous commitment to impartial reporting, on which the BBC’s reputation depends, is essential.
We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are very important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours in the document attached below. You’ll be asked questions relating to them as part of your application for this role.
