BBC Arabic's interactive formats on all platforms provide a multimedia forum for informed discussion and debate. This means audiences to the BBC are exposed to the widest range of views and opinion on the big issues of the day.
As a Broadcast Journalist working in this exciting and demanding live environment, you’ll be working across all platforms producing news and current affairs content in Arabic that is accurate, impartial and of high quality. On a daily basis, you’ll be writing and researching stories and other programme material in Arabic. As much of our source material will be in English, you’ll also be translating, adapting and editing material into Arabic. To ensure our stories stay current, you’ll have responsibility for moving stories on, amending and updating material as required, thinking through and around editorial problems and developing realistic alternative strategies and approaches. Offering original ideas for coverage, writing analysis and features and arranging and conducting interviews will also be part of your role as will undertaking pre and post production work and using online production systems to produce content for BBC Arabic.com.
The Ideal Candidate
Your recent, relevant journalistic experience in a news environment will be key to your success in this role as will your ability to work creatively and flexibly. With a genuine passion for explaining the world to our audiences, you’ll have an in depth current knowledge of Middle Eastern and international current affairs. You’ll have Arabic as your first (or equivalent) language and be fluent in English. Coupled with this, your experience of translating news from English into Arabic is required. We need your understanding of the growing importance of social media and the benefits and challenges it brings.
As you’ll be working in a multimedia environment, it’s essential that you can write and adapt material with clarity, originality, accuracy and appropriate style for our different output streams. You’ll have a good knowledge of production techniques and be comfortable working in a busy production team. A good knowledge of our output is also required and we need you to be aware of the needs of our audiences.
