Head of Business Development - Factual

The Head of Business Development Factual will be responsible for increasing the lifetime value of BBC Studios factual content through the development of key business partnerships including BBC Worldwide, local and international broadcasters, digital platforms, OTT channels, talent, brands, publishers, trade partners and agencies.

The role will drive commercial innovation through supporting the sale of additional products and services to our existing customers at the same time as growing the diversity of BBC Studios clients as we drive the value of our factual IP beyond the TV.

A further element of the role will focus on the upskilling of the Business Unit Teams through adoption of a highly collaborative approach, to ensure the free flow of information and insight.

Role Responsibility

  • To build the skills and knowledge of the Business Unit teams in commercial opportunity and exploitation, setting clear controls to ensure they abide to Legal and Business Affairs Frameworks
  • To support the development and realisation of the commercial and new business strategy for BBC Studios and Factual in conjunction with our strategic commercial partners, including Worldwide.  Working very closely with the Genre Director, Head of CRBA/RBA/Business and Senior Creative Business Unit leaders to identify opportunities, align with BBCWW and work together to exploit them.
  • To liaise with major partners and help establish a Factual commercial strategy, ensuring the strategy is integrated across all production areas at a genre level.
  • To support the development of new partners and new business models which reflect the opportunities that multi-platform and digital present such as, Portals, IPTV, VOD, Brands, Talent, Publishers, Commercial players, etc.
  • To manage the partnership conflicts which may arise as both existing linear relationships need to be maintained whilst new digital partnerships are forged.
  • To actively manage stakeholders in supporting the agreed strategic objectives of the commercial strategy considering both short term and long term 
  • To manage the flow of commercial funds back into the BBC Studios to support the commercial strategy in the creation of additional content, digital content production and content development.
  • To lead the creation of Programme Brand Franchises and to support the development of brands recognising the public value as well as commercial.
  • To be an expert on all forms of commercial funding available for BBC programming, advising BBC Studios Factual on commercial potential, market trends etc.
  • To identify and progress new business activity as markets develop.  In particular, to develop the publishing business by proactively exploring the market.
  • Working with the rest of the senior teams in Studios, and with the wider BBC, to contribute and develop new business models in a fast changing multi-platform environment
  • To ensure we correctly reflect our remit as a public service broadcaster and trade fairly in all our commercial negotiations.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Extensive experience at a senior level of commercial business development, negotiating and sales.
  • Substantial general Business and Strategy experience in a commercial organisation, demonstrating sound and pragmatic business judgement.
  • Proven track record of working in a creative environment and influencing the creative community at a senior level; extensive experience of working with Production staff and demonstrable understanding of their needs and motivations.
  • Significant experience within the international television industry.
  • Significant experience in fostering constructive and influential working relationships at a senior level and to build networks of influence.
  • Substantial partnership experience
  • Digital Experience
  • Ability to pitch content confidently and appropriately.
  • Good knowledge of contractual and copyright matters.
  • A genuine interest in the range of genre content.
  • Substantial sales and/or negotiating experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of rights valuation procedures.
  • Ability to understand and work within Policy and deal frameworks (BBC Fair Trading policy)
  • Knowledge of the key media markets worldwide.
  • General Business and Strategy experience in a commercial organisation, demonstrating a sound business understanding
  • Good knowledge of contractual and copyright matters.

  • Experience of working in a matrix organisation
  • Experience of building and working in a newly established team
