Lead Data Architect

Job Introduction

The BBC aims to stimulate and delight audiences across the UK with distinctive, creative content. To support this aim, BBC Design & Engineering is entering a period of significant and exciting change, merging multi-disciplinary technology teams from public service and Worldwide in order to define a BBC fit for the next generation.

The vision is simple: The new division will lead the work to re-engineer the BBC, making it into a more agile, more creative and more confident organisation for the Digital age. This complex transformation will enable us to deliver our mission to Inform, Educate and Entertain our audiences in new and distinctive ways.

You will ensure that the vision, roadmap and strategy for your specialist area is delivered using standardised, reusable and innovative architectures which direct investment, bringing value and innovation to BBC divisions and the BBC’s external partner network.

You will realise the strategic architecture, platforms and product strategy ensuring consistency and standardisation of architecture and related best practices within your area of specialism.    

Role Responsibility

  • Work collaboratively within a specialised architecture team to assist the Head of Data in the creation of Data Strategy and Architectures which deliver adaptable, scalable platforms across the BBC
  • Within your specialism, realise the adoption and monitoring of the relevant component(s) of the overall Data Strategy, Architecture and Forward Plan which will enable the BBC to exploit new technologies and to evolve and transform working practices in a measurable way
  • Understand and own the asset landscape within your specialism – identifying gaps and potential fragilities and actively develop solutions; including working with external suppliers to align requirements with solutions
  • Recognize the opportunities presented in your area of specialism and take the initiative in solving complex technical problems and identifying and rapidly pursuing appropriate strategies which deliver business benefit
  • Create, design and develop solutions, and coordinate efforts with development teams, working within your implementation area

Participate in the selection and incubation of emerging technologies and approaches in order to test whether they will enable the BBC to deliver its objectives and seize opportunities in a timely manner. Assist with solving business challenges through innovation,  striving for improved predictability, performance, efficiency.

Desirable

  • Contributing to and influencing the development of area of specialism or industry domain
  • Broadcast, production, start-up or media experience
  • A mix of Public Sector and Commercial experience, particularly start up experience
  • Participation in published documents within your area of specialism

The Ideal Candidate

What you’ll be doing -

  • Drive consistency across our data architecture and management practices across the platform teams and support the development of a central data warehouse for platform.
  • Set up and govern a data architecture & management community of practice across our department to ensure that we’re making sensible and informed choices around technology, tooling and vendors.
  • Manage a team of data managers: across content and audience data, ensuring there is oversight on new data development and that existing data provision is robust and fit for purpose.
  • Influence information strategy: By partnering with business unit leadership, and through the rationalization of the information value chain, the data architect will provide strategic recommendations to maximize the value of information assets via their creation, access and use.
  • Maximize value derived from data and analytics: Foster value creation using the organization's data assets, as well as the external data ecosystem. This includes aiding value creation through data exploitation, envisioning data-enabled strategies, as well as enabling all forms of business outcomes through analytics, data and analytics governance, and enterprise information policy.
  • Enhance decision making: Use tools such as business information models to provide the organization with a future-state view of the information landscape that is unencumbered by the specific data implementation details imposed by proprietary solutions or technologies. Assist decision design.
  • Enable effective data and analytics governance: Suggest who can take what actions with what information, and under what circumstances. Assist data and analytics leaders, and business and IT leadership in developing information governance processes and structures working in partnership with the Data Compliance team.
  • Manage risk: Aid the definition of data classifications and data zoning to allow information assets to be immediately identified and proactively managed as more information becomes federated in a digital economy.
  • Enable enterprise information management: Ensure that the architecture is used as a lens and a filter to identify, prioritize and execute the data and analytic initiatives with clear line of sight to enterprise strategies and business outcomes.
  • Secure data and analytic assets: Aid in the analysis of data and analytics security requirements and solutions, and work with the information security partners to ensure that enterprise data and analytics assets are treated as a protected assets.
  • Improve EIM performance: Aid efforts to improve business performance through enterprise information solutions and capabilities, such as master data management (MDM), metadata management, analytics, content management, data integration, and related information management or information infrastructure components.

  • Demonstrable experience of performing a job of this nature, at the scale that the BBC operates at
  • A team player who can coach, develop and mentor the data community, and also provide leadership amongst your peers.
  • Experience of Agile software delivery at scale
  • The ability to present in front of senior and C-Level colleagues, and drive and shape the thinking around data architecture within the BBC.
