Lead Developer - BBC Audience Platform

Job Introduction

The BBC Platform Audience teams have been transforming how the BBC engages with its audience by delivering more of the content they love. We do this by delivering a cloud based API suite of personalisation and participation services that fuel our big data solutions. Our services include, BBC account, recommendations, data storage, notifications, participation services such as comments and voting and data warehouse solutions. Our services are transforming the BBC into a data driven organisation supporting the delivery of BBC’s services such as iPlayer, News, Sport, Children, Weather, Radio and TV.  

This role can be based in our Salford or London offices.

The BBC Account Team team’s ‘front-end’ specialists (approx. 6 engineers) that provide development of the front-end services of our Identity System; working with product, delivery, test and DevOps.

This role will be a part of the family of Team Leads (approx. 7) that delivery the catalogue of myBBC Personalisation and Participation services.

The Account team is made up of front and backend teams.

The Account Front End team builds a picture of each person who signs in to the BBC, enabling products – News, iPlayer, Children’s – to create unique experiences for everyone. It will be a destination where people can explore their past activity, manage their interests and discover new content. It will be a service across BBC Online, powering personalisation. And it will provide the insights which will guide future development and design of all BBC products. The team works with a Kanban agile process.

Account Back End Team. A reliable, scalable identity system is a critical enabler of the Audience Platform vision.  To succeed, we need to deliver elegant user experiences, as well as a service that’s performant and reliable at scales to tens of millions of users, in a secure manner. The Account Back End team is an agile team who are responsible for building and maintaining this system which is based on the ForgeRock platform. We are continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible on this platform, which is deployed within AWS.

Role Responsibility

What You’ll Be Doing

This new role is based in the BBC Account Team, which consists of a small group of passionate techies from a variety of coding backgrounds: from front-end PHP, React to back-end Node and JAVA API integration.  We all share a mutual belief in beautiful code that’s test-driven and easy for the next person to pick up.  

Continuous Integration means you could be deploying to production multiple times a day and even in your first week. Being involved in the full life cycle of the products, you’ll need to be able to adapt quickly to new or changing requirements, produce rapid prototypes and communicate effectively with the team as a whole, not just other engineers.

As we receive very high traffic, you will be responsible for ensuring the services remain at peak performance and scalable to meet the ever growing demands. Working in the BBC Account Team will give you an excellent opportunity to influence and impact the full BBC estate as more products develop their personalization objectives.  You will be using the latest technologies, in a team that inspires innovation and autonomy.

The Ideal Candidate

 What You’ll Need:

Further to our standard engineering job description (above), this role will lead our Front-End Full Stack engineers and so particular experience in the following is desirable

  • Proficient with JavaScript across the whole stack
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services and its associated technologies

These aspects of our standard Engineering Team Lead requirements are beneficial but not essential

  • Expertise in database design
