Monitoring Journalist (Arabic), BBC Monitoring
BBC Monitoring is part of the BBC Global News Division and monitors open source international media in more than 100 languages. We provide breaking news as well as analysis and background information on key developments in the region to the BBC, government and commercial customers. You will work in the Middle East team which focuses on developments in North African countries in particular, in addition to other Middle East countries as required by the news agenda. The team operates 18 hours a day, 365 days a year, and through an expert selection from an extensive range of sources provides insightful and reliable coverage of political, economic, security and media news. We show not only what the media are reporting but how they are telling the story.
Working as a journalist, you will monitor media in Arabic and select news and information to translate, edit and write copy accurately and quickly in clear idiomatic English. Working collaboratively with the wider team, you will maintain, develop and disseminate expert knowledge, ensuring that output meets BBC Monitoring's purpose, stakeholder requirements and BBC editorial standards. Through this work, you will contribute to the production and delivery of a consistent and reliable service of news, information and insight from the world's media. This role will involve shift work including weekends and occasionally nights.
The Ideal Candidate
You will have an excellent command of English and Arabic, both written and spoken with experience of translating, editing and writing copy from Arabic to English and English to Arabic. You must be able to demonstrate an ability to work under pressure and as part of a team. You will also have strong technical and computer skills, including an ability to develop multimedia production skills.
Knowledge of regional and international affairs, especially in relation to the Middle East and North Africa is essential in this position, as is the ability to handle social media. Fluency in another language spoken in the region would be desirable, as would the knowledge of /familiarity with regional media.
Salary: maximum of £26,734 inclusive of allowances.
