BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra are based on the top floor of the BBC’s brand new headquarters in central London – it’s the building you see at the start of the 10 O’clock News each night on television!
Radio 1 was established in 1967 and aims to entertain and engage young audiences (15-29 year olds), with a wide ranging mix of music and speech. At the last count, just over 11 million people listened to us each week.
Our presenters include Nick Grimshaw at Breakfast, Zane Lowe and Jameela Jamil, who looks after The Official Chart on Sunday. We feature a lot of new music and look to support new artists from the UK.
We’re also famous for live music – thousands of bands over the years have recorded sessions at our Maida Vale studios, or performed in Radio 1’s Live Lounge; while our own festival – Radio 1’s Big Weekend, attracts some of the biggest names in music – this year’s event included Calvin Harris, Biffy Clyro and Bruno Mars.
You can find us online here: www.bbc.co.uk/radio1
We want our young audience to constantly help us develop and shape everything we do here at Radio 1 & 1Xtra.
You don’t need to have had any radio experience to apply for this scheme, we’ll help teach you the skills for that, but you’ll need to be able to show us that you are passionate about new music and youth culture!
