Job Introduction

BBC R&D is at the forefront of many of the new broadcast and media technologies. Our research work focuses on new technologies that are expected to be rolled out over the next 5 years. We are proud of the fact that we have both the theoretical knowledge and practical approach to turn our work into a reality.  We are based in two main labs, one in London and one in MediaCityUK, Salford.

Role Responsibility

You'll be working as an R&D Engineer in the Broadcast and Connected Systems team based in London.

This team works with partners across the BBC and industry, shaping and defining internet connected digital television platforms, which support our iPlayer and interactive Red Button products, and seeking opportunities to develop innovative new services.

The team you'll be working in is responsible for the technical design, assurance and optimisation of the BBC's output on broadcast platforms and defining the future shape of our broadcast and IP TV platforms. You'll be working with colleagues that run our distribution platforms as well as working on new projects and ideas. You should get to see an impact of your work on audiences within 12 months. You may also occasionally be asked for a deep analysis of our systems and services to produce service continuity recommendations and improvements.

The Ideal Candidate

You'll ideally have development or research background in broadcast or IP distribution technologies. You should have knowledge of, or an active interest in, one or more DVB systems and associated systems engineering, including MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video compression, audio compression and multiplexing, picture quality assessment, mobile networking or internet content distribution.  Whether your strengths lean toward broadcast technology or IP/mobile content distribution you are keen to learn. We are looking for someone who can identify and resolve problems and research questions creatively and isn't afraid to get hands-on with our broadcast and IP distribution infrastructure. You'll be able to use your knowledge of video and audio standards to work together with colleagues in R&D and across the BBC and industry.
