Software Engineer (Javascript)

Job Introduction

BBC Research & Development is offering you the chance to build the next generation of broadcasting tools. Our platform (IP Studio) provides a flexible backend for capturing, storing and processing broadcast content. However, it is nothing without great front-end tools for both production and engineering teams.

We are using JavaScript in combination with technologies such as DASH, WebRTC and Video Context (https://github.com/bbc/videocontext) to build real-time, browser-based production applications, and we need more great engineers to join a growing team in this area.

Role Responsibility

We are building a new team of software engineers specifically focused on creating high quality front-end applications for our IP Studio platform.

You’ll need to apply your cutting-edge JavaScript software engineering practice to take application requirements through to implementation. You’ll also need to be up for a challenge, as our work makes some significant demands of current-generation browser technology.

Day-to-day, you’ll need to make sure the code you write is high quality, has good test coverage and is easily deployable.

The Ideal Candidate

We’re interested in your experience of:

  • Working across a JavaScript stack, in particular React, Redux, Node, ESLint, Webpack, Jamsine/JEST
  • Working with agile tracking tools (e.g. Jira) and continuous integration (e.g. Jenkins).
  • Functional and non-functional testing within a JavaScript context.
  • Deploying JavaScript applications to a range of server environments.

Experience of one or more of the following is desirable but not essential:

  • Working with HTML5 canvas and Video elements.
  • Deploying applications in a range environments, e.g. bare-metal Linux servers to public cloud.
  • Use of configuration management tools such as Ansible, Chef or Puppet.

Package Description

This role is initially being offered as a 12-month fixed-term contract.

Location: We are offering this role either in London W12 or Salford Quays M50.

Grade: 7D
