Software Engineer

Job Introduction

The Software Engineer will be responsible for the design, writing, testing and support of software to meet a set of product requirements.

Role Responsibility


  • Work with 3rd party teams and other in-house teams
  • Design and develop fit-for-purpose solutions that are flexible, secure, maintainable and performant
  • Explore and understand new and existing solutions and solve complex problems
  • Consider and design for security and privacy, by understanding the relevant policies and constraints

Tools & Automation

  • Experience of build and continuous integration tools (e.g. TeamCity, CruiseControl, Hudson or Jenkins)
  • Experience of source control systems (e.g. SVN, Git), bug tracking tools (e.g. Jira) and Wikis
  • Experience of task automation using Grunt or similar
  • Experience of using network analysis / bandwidth throttling tools such as Wireshark, Charles, Browsermob
  • Experience of test and issue management tools e.g. TestRail, Quality Centre, Jira, Enterprise Tester, etc.
  • Continuous integration (TeamCity, CruiseControl, Hudson or Jenkins)
  • Build Tools (webpack, grunt, gulp)
  • Automation (Jenkins, Cucumber)
    • Experience of load and performance testing – JMeter or similar open source tool preferable

Cloud Infrastructure

  • AWS infrastructure experience & scripting (CloudFormation, Autoscaling, etc)
  • Experience with cloud-based architectures and deployments e.g. AWS.
  • Experience of managing test environments, test devices with multiple OS versions
  • Infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Amazon Web Services (EC2, SQS, SNS, S3)
  • Message queue systems (SQS, RabbitMQ)
  • API Gateways (Apigee, AWS API Gateway)
  • CDNs (CloudFront, Akamai, Limelight)
  • Serverless (Lambda, Edge Computing)


Languages & Frameworks

  • Solid understanding of HTML and CSS
  • JavaScript Frameworks (React, Angular 1.x, Backbone)
  • ES6
  • PHP Frameworks (Symfony)
  • Drupal 7, 8
  • Node.js
  • Python, Ruby, etc
  • Test Frameworks (PHPUnit, Mocha)
  • CSS Preprocessors (sass, less, stylus)
    • Willingness to learn and work with technologies across the full development stack used by BBC Worldwide

Data stores

  • Experience of database design and use in software applications
  • SQL (MySQL, Postgres, MSSQL)
  • NoSQL (Dynamo, Cassandra, Mongo, Redshift)
  • Caching (Varnish, Memcache, Redis)

The Ideal Candidate

Key Skills

  • PHP
  • JavaScript/Ecmascript/Node.js
  • Experienced in designing REST APIs, and understanding API design and integration patterns
  • Experienced in cloud technologies, particularly Amazon AWS services
  • Willingness to support your team’s solution(s) through in-hours and out-of-hours rotas
  • Demonstrable experience writing and maintaining robust and performant software, using scalable web architectures and approaches
  • Minimum of 5 years of combined web-based software engineering experience
  • Competence in assessing and developing non-functional solution aspects (analytics and monitoring, performance and capacity, security and privacy considerations)

Technical Leadership

  • Learn new technologies and keep abreast of existing technologies
  • Play an active role in identifying, refining and promoting best practice in all aspects of software engineering
  • Be prepared to take a lead role for one or more technical disciplines and act as mentor and coach for your peers in regard to that specific discipline
