Welcome to Work Experience opportunities across the regions within Radio. If youâre interested in Radio Production, Drama, Factual & Entertainment and getting some great practical experience on your CV, youâve come to the right place.
The BBC is responsible for all the regional radio networks including Radio Oxford and The Asian Network.
Every placement is different, but your Work Experience will give you a good all round overview of Radio across music, news, debate and entertainment. We aim to give you an introduction on how local, national and international programmes are produced from beginning to end. You may get the chance to watch broadcasts go out on air, and understand the production processes used in areas of Drama and Entertainment.
During your online application, you will have the opportunity to choose your placement and tell us about the things youâre really interested in.

What weâre looking for
We want people who are creative, keen to learn and are up for a challenge. In Radio we work in teams where everyone has a role to play. Weâre looking for people who are friendly and good communicators.
We work at a fast pace. So youâll need to be enthusiastic and motivated to keep up.
We take our jobs seriously and really enjoy what we do. If youâre passionate about Radio and are prepared to work hard, ask lots of questions and contribute ideas, youâll fit right in.
You donât need a media qualification to apply. You just need to be able to show us that youâre passionate about Radio and have a genuine desire to find out what the industry has to offer.

We have placements available in the following areas:
Asian Network - Birmingham (over 18)
Asian Network offers an opportunity to gain valuable programme making experience on various shows such as the Tommy Sandhu show and Raj & The Pablo Show.
Radio and Music Production - Bristol (July only - over 18âs)
The unit produces major Radio Four strands including Any Questions, Farming Today, Costing The Earth, Poetry Please, Great Lives, Ramblings, Soul Music, With Great Pleasure and A Good Read, plus dramas, readings and documentaries. The successful candidate will directly assist the team of production co-ordinators. We anticipate this will include assistance with administrative tasks primarily. They will also need a real passion for speech radio, an understanding of and enthusiasm for our output.
Radio Beds, Herts & Bucks, Three Countries Radio (over 18)
To initiate and produce, as part of a team, a wide variety of news and current affairs material for Radio from across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
Radio Berkshire (over 18)
You'll have the opportunity to; work closely with all our programme teams, set up interviews, record interviews, edit audio, write cues and general programme production tasks. We expect candidates to clearly demonstrate a commitment to working within the broadcast industry in their applications.
Radio Cumbria (over 18)
Radio Cumbria provides an insight into researching, preparing and maybe reporting on a variety of news and programme stories.
Radio Derby (over 18)
BBC Radio Derby will arrange a placement which gives you an overview of the full range of roles within the station. You will spend time with news, sport, programmes and reporters. We will try, where possible, to tailor a placement to your interests.
Radio Drama - 'Home Front' - Birmingham (open to applicants 14 and over)
If you love listening to Radio Drama and are interested in our countryâs history maybe this is the placement for you? A specially commissioned original drama is planned as the spine of the Radio 4 offer to mark the centenary of World War One over four years, with Home Front starting on Monday 4 August 2014. This is an exciting drama serial, unprecedented in scale with 500 episodes between now and 2018, each around 12 minutes long. This is an opportunity to be mentored by our specialist team in all aspects of the work that they do from engaging in research, contracting talent, to timing the takes in studio.
Radio Essex (over 18)
Get an opportunity to overview BBC Essexâs news and programme operations. Your time with us may involve observing and shadowing, with some opportunities to take on specific tasks.
Radio Guernsey - Channel Islands Radio (August and September only â over 18)
Radio Guernsey provides an opportunity to watch the whole range of broadcast career opportunities that are available in local radio, television and online.
Radio Jersey - Channel Islands (over 18)
A placement aimed at those students who have an interest in multimedia. Get an opportunity to watch the whole range of broadcast career opportunities that are available in local television, radio and online.
Radio Leicester (July and September only â over 18
You'll gain experience in setting up and recording interviews, editing audio, writing cues and programme production tasks.
Radio Lincolnshire (August and September only â over 18)
You'll get to experience working with news and programme teams doing basic research, taking phone calls, greeting guests and supporting presenters. Depending on programme requirements, there may be opportunities to develop basic interviewing and editing skills.
Radio Manchester (over 18)
You will be paired with one of the many programme teams on station assisting with a number of key areas depending on whether your interests lie in News or General programmes. You could be recording vox pops and setting up interviews to taking calls from listeners and meet and greeting studio guests.
Radio Northampton (0ver 18)
The placement will provide the successful candidate with an insight into how local news is sourced and how stories make it onto air. Candidates will be able to shadow a selection of reporters as they cover news stories; work alongside various weekday programme teams; learn how to use recording equipment and editing software. This placement covers news only and not music production or presentation.
Radio Oxford (over 18)
Get an opportunity to overview Radio Oxfordâs news and programme operations. Your time with us may involve observing and shadowing, with some opportunities to take on specific tasks.
BBC Introducing - Oxford (over 18)
An opportunity to gain experience of working in a live music broadcasting environment over the course of three weeks, working on one week day and on a Saturday. You'll work alongside the BBC Introducing in Oxford team and will spend time observing and shadowing production staff, with some opportunities to take on specific tasks. Candidates should have an interest in radio and music production in particular.
Radio Stoke (over 18)
You will get the opportunity to work across the schedules both in the studio and on location to provide an all-round experience of work on a local radio station
Radio Suffolk (over 18)
Experience an overview of local news journalism and radio programming involving observing and shadowing, plus the opportunity to record and edit pieces their own pieces.
Radio Sussex - Brighton (over 18)
BBC Sussex is pleased to offer placements at its Brighton headquarters, across a range of programmes, including our flagship Breakfast programme. You will get the chance to shadow our presenters and producers, along with the bulletins team and our Sussex reporter, who is deployed to stories across the county. Ideally, you should already be on a relevant course and/or have gained some previous experience elsewhere (eg community radio).
Radio Surrey - Guildford (over 18)
BBC Surrey is pleased to offer placements to gain experience primarily with our flagship Breakfast Show that goes out each weekday morning from 6 until 9. You will get the chance to shadow our presenter and producers, along with the bulletins team and our Surrey reporter, who is deployed to stories across the county. Ideally, you should already be on a relevant course and/or have gained some previous experience elsewhere (eg community radio).
Radio Wiltshire (over 18)
You will have the opportunity to work with our news or program teams in a busy local radio newsroom serving the county of Wiltshire. You will see how bulletins are compiled and be able to shadow our reporters. You may even have the opportunity to produce your own audio for output on air under the guidance of BBC staff.
Radio WM â Birmingham (over 18)
BBC WM is offering a one-week placement (in either July, August or September 2014) for an enthusiastic applicant who can show evidence of a keen interest in working in local radio, a knowledge of WM and the stationâs listeners and who is full of great ideas. The placement will include an opportunity to work in the newsroom, shadowing a news journalist, pitching his/her own story ideas, carrying out research, editing, working with programme producers â helping to set up guests, features and talking points and working alongside broadcast assistants in the studio.
Radio York (over 18)
Gain experience in journalism, radio programme production and for those wishing to work behind the scenes the more technical aspect of the running of a radio station. Candidates must demonstrate an interest in radio, or are actively studying for a journalism or radio production qualification.
