BBC Cymru Wales is the national broadcaster of Wales, providing a wide range of English and Welsh language programming and output for audiences on television, radio and online.  Its national TV programming for Wales is available on BBC One Wales, BBC Two Wales, BBC iPlayer and S4C. It offers two national radio stations, BBC Radio Wales in English and BBC Radio Cymru in Welsh, and two distinct websites. It is also responsible for a significant volume of network programming across TV, Radio and Online, including programmes such as Doctor Who, Crimewatch and Casualty. BBC Cymru Wales is also home of the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales.

This diversity across many different strands of TV Radio and Online output enables work experience students a unique opportunity to experience the BBC across a wide range of genres and platforms.

BBC Cymru Wales employs around 1200 staff, the majority in sites in Cardiff and Cardiff Bay, but also in other locations across Wales including Bangor, Wrexham, Aberystwyth and Carmarthen.

Role Responsibility

These placements provide a “taster” experience of working within the BBC and broadcasting industry. It is aimed at individuals who want to work in the media and would like to find out more about the range of jobs potentially available. Candidates will have the opportunity to see television, radio and online production at first hand.  Candidates will have the chance to spend time with those who produce and co-ordinate the output as well as the craft specialists who capture and post-produce it, along with the staff that provide engineering and IT support across all aspects of programme making and transmission.  

The placement may involve spending time at outside broadcasts, single camera shoots, studio recordings or in edit or graphic design suites and will give candidates a good overview of the various aspects of both television and radio production. 

Please note that some days might start early or finish late.

The Ideal Candidate

We're looking for applicants with a demonstrable interest either in Radio, Television or Online programme making and broadcasting.

Candidates should have good interpersonal and communication skills, be creative, adaptable and highly motivated. The ability to work well in a busy team is crucial. As well as needing an interest in broadcasting, candidates should have an awareness of BBC Wales and its local output.

Programme-making can be hectic and unpredictable and applicants should be confident that they will work well in such an environment.  The successful candidate should be prepared to ask lots of questions and contribute ideas.

Background/Experience

We welcome applicants from all educational backgrounds. Candidates do not need to have a media qualification to apply but should be able to demonstrate their passion and genuine interest in broadcasting.  

We have placements available in the following areas:

BBC Trust (Cardiff - over 18's only) – An opportunity to gain experience working with the BBC Audience Council Wales and the BBC National Trustee for Wales. The placement may involve helping to plan and organise the audience outreach of the team in Cardiff.

BBC Bangor Taster Week (open to applicants 14 and over) – Spend a week shadowing various departments in Bangor. This may include Radio Cymru general programmes, Radio, TV and Online News, TV editing, Radio audio and engineering support

Crimewatch (Cardiff - over 18's ) - An opportunity to see the entire production process assisting the production team to produce the reconstruction films as well as helping them to prepare for the studio broadcast and assisting on the studio floor during the live transmission.

Factual and Music (Cardiff - over 18's only) – You’ll get the opportunity to work on a production which could be for Network or Local TV or Network Radio assisting the production team with regards to research, filming and post production 

Interactive & Learning dept: Web Assistant (Cardiff – July only - open to applicants 16 and over) - A two-week work experience placement for an enthusiastic person with an interest in online publishing.  The placement will entail publishing of web-page content primarily to BBC Cymru Wales' intranet site, also some work on the Wales corporate section of the bbc.co.uk external site.

News and Radio Production (Wrexham - over 18's) – You’ll spend time working alongside a reporter working for TV , Radio or News Online; attending news meetings, helping to research guests for programmes and shadowing producers as their programmes go on air.

News Gathering (Cardiff – over 18’s) - The placement would involve spending time with a group of journalists who provide news coverage for the BBC on TV, Radio and Online.  The candidate may get the opportunity to research, write and find guests for programmes, observing how programmes get to air and spend time with operational staff and reporters

Radio Cymru (Cardiff - over 18's  & Fluent in Welsh) – Gain an opportunity to observe and work on all types of programmes as for Bangor above, and you will also be able to experience the technical aspects of editing programmes on the latest high-tech systems which are in use here in Radio Cymru.

Radio Cymru News (Bangor July & September only – over 18’s) – Gaining experience working in the busy newsroom in Bangor and possibly shadow one of our reporters as they gather material for radio, television and online for BBC Cymru Wales. There may also be a chance to see how a live Welsh language radio programme is produced. The placement will be for one week. The ability to speak Welsh is not essential but candidates need to be aware that the majority of the radio programmes produced is for Radio Cymru.

Radio Cymru (Bangor) (available July & September - Over 18’s & Fluent in Welsh) – Radio Cymru offers an opportunity to observe and work and on all types of programmes be it Drama, Documentaries, Youth Programmes and Light Entertainment. The placement duration will last 1 week.

Radio Wales (Cardiff - Over 18's) – You’ll spend the week getting involved in the production process for Jason Mohammad's mid-morning show, Eleri Sion's afternoon show and some of the station's weekend programmes.

Technology, Audio and TV filming and editing (Bangor – over 18’s) – You’ll see first-hand the work done by three departments in Bangor. The technology team ensure that all equipment needed for broadcasting works, the audio team edit and broadcast our radio programmes and the multi-skilled news team film and edit material for tv news. The placement will be for one week.

Wales Sport (Late August & September only - over 18 & under 18) – An opportunity to get a taste of production for the BBC Sport website from Wales (bbc.co.uk/sportwales; bbc.co.uk/scrumv and bbc.co.uk/welshfootball); programmes and bulletins for Radio Wales, Radio Cymru and TV production.

We offer two types of placement:

Office-based placements - for successful applicants aged 14 and over.  

Placements for successful applicants aged 18 and over. These are likely to include assignments outside the office environment
