This is an exciting new role, working across both Drama Commissioning and the BBC Writersroom. It is a hybrid role that contains elements of a traditional Assistant Commissioning role - offering support across development and production alongside responsibility for sourcing, championing and developing new, underrepresented and authentic voices through BBC Writersroom.
You will report into the Head of New Writing, supporting them in the development and implementation of the strategic aims of BBC Writersroom, as well as working on a day to day basis with the Drama Commissioner responsible for the Nation the role is based in across both developments and productions.
You will scout talent from your own established, extended networks; providing strategic support and having an ongoing and focused dialogue that is informed by the needs and priorities of BBC Drama Commissioning. You will also develop relationships with independent producers and companies with the aim of growing and supporting indigenous development and production.
Working with BBC Writersroom you will deliver core initiatives (e.g. Voices groups, TV Drama Writers Programme, Writers Access Groups etc.) finding the best new writing talent, helping to organise/run the schemes, and applying your editorial skills to support the writers. There will also be a strong emphasis on building relationships with external cultural organisations and groups to generate partnerships and foster creative engagement at a local level.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a passionate, proactive, committed candidate who ensures fair representation, diversity and inclusion in their work. Having a sound knowledge, understanding and passion for the current television scripted landscape is core to this role as is an ability to see how your work fits with the wider needs of both departments in the service of UK audiences.
A strong, knowledge of working with scripts is essential, as is an experienced level of understanding of the commissioning landscape. You will have valid experience in creating first-class content from a TV drama, theatre, film, online and/or interactive production background. Experience in spotting and nurturing creative, writing talent is key to this role, as is a practiced understanding of how to enable and support writers to do their best work. You will have the ability to work with a wide range of creative people – commissioners, writers, producers – and to listen effectively to different stakeholders' needs.
