BBC Studioworks - Studio Engineer, 12 month FTC/attachment

BBC Studioworks is looking for the next generation of talented Engineers, we are seeking people from all backgrounds to join our teams. 

Studio Engineers undertake duties in our studios and technical areas, operating across the studio as necessary to cover programme and maintenance needs. The Studio Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, alignment, modification and operation of a wide range of broadcast equipment and systems deployed in our Studios, ensuring that all technical facilities necessary to meet programme and transmission requirements are in place. You’ll be working at the highest level of technical complexity under programme and/or operational pressures.

Role Responsibility

Partner with production and resource teams s to ensure operational and production needs are effectively met. Devise ways of achieving the needs of productions by means of technical innovation and development.

Ensure technical faults are cleared and alternative ways of meeting production or other requirements are identified and implemented with the minimum loss of studio time.

Advise operational and production staff on the technical capabilities of studio systems and equipment to assist them in achieving specific results. This may involve attending planning meetings prior to the production day.

Ensure electronic equipment is maintained and aligned to defined standards, and is updated as required. Also ensure accurate line-up of vision monitoring facilities.

Rig and operate VTRs, servers, DVDs and other related equipment as required. Carry out associated tape/disc handling activities (eg striping & labelling of video tapes/DVDs).

Perform camera vision control and operate other engineering set up controls and prepare equipment for location use, and occasionally provide location support.

Responsible for devising modifications to equipment or systems as required and supervise appropriate field trials. Plan and deliver minor refurbishment projects. Liaise with staff, contractors and commercial manufacturers before, during and after major area refurbishments.  Supervise and direct acceptance testing of new and refurbished equipment. 

Work with BBC specialist departments, contractors and manufacturers to identify and resolve complex fault conditions or design problems and supervise the implementation of appropriate solutions.

Report and progress housekeeping and area fabric problems either directly with the appropriate manager. Ensure compliance with requirements of Statutory and BBC Health & Safety regulations and that appropriate records are kept.

A Studio Engineer is a skilled role which operates autonomously, with sound working knowledge of the television broadcast studio environment gained from your experience in the industry. You will have had experience working in a commercial organisation and will possess an industry recognised qualification relevant to television broadcast engineering, e.g. a degree, HND or equivalent. Coupled with the technical knowledge and experience of vision, sound, communication and computer systems relative to a television studio environment, you’ll be confident communicating with your team and customers, focused on providing an effective solution.

With a positive enthusiasm, you’ll conduct yourself with efficiency, tact and empathy, supporting the operational and production staff with expert knowledge. Customer awareness and an appreciation of productions requirements are essential, together with proven experience advising on the critical assessment of television pictures and waveforms. You’ll be skilled at prioritising your workload effectively and be able to escalate and delegate work accordingly.
