Chief Design Officer

Job Introduction

The BBC’s User Experience and Design department (UX&D) are the team responsible for designing amazing digital experiences for our audiences and BBC colleagues, from apps to websites, from News, via iPlayer to CBeebies.   This is a unique opportunity to play a key role leading this innovative and award-winning team of 200+ strong UX designers, architects, writers and researchers, creating impactful, public-centred, digital experiences for over 350 million people around the world.

Role Responsibility

Reporting to the BBC’s Chief Technology & Product Officer you will be tasked with developing and executing the strategic creative direction for user experience and design (UX&D) across the BBC’s full portfolio of platforms, products, services, tools and systems.  You will maintain and amplify the world-class reputation the department has as a Centre of Excellence for all aspects of user experience design.

You will promote close collaboration with technical, editorial, marketing and product teams to create online experiences that are simple to use, delightful, and transcend the boundaries between old media and new. 

The role will be a catalytic influence and presence supporting our transition to a new kind of digital public service media and data business. Ensuring design coherence across the BBC, delivering design excellence and promoting “Public Centred Design” both within the online portfolio, but also in terms of employing design and “design thinking” in the wider business.

Your savvy commercial focus will mean you will balance creativity with effectiveness. Setting and delivering objectives that support the creation of maximum value within the BBC’s public purposes. You will make the case for appropriate investment in design practice (in all its forms, not just UX) to deliver useful, useable and delightful experiences for audiences and staff colleagues alike. 

Your inspirational and human-centred leadership qualities will enable you to tell design stories that influence colleagues across the BBC, support career development and talent retention within the department, promoting and championing collaboration, creativity and diversity.


Are you the right candidate?

We are looking for an innovative thought leader who is an expert in User Experience Design having demonstrable experience forming, communicating and delivering a robust creative vision, with and through a large-scale UX&D team.

In order to excel in this role you will need to be:

  • A deep functional expert with broad and comprehensive understanding of user experience design practise, methods and theory and extensive experience spanning design and technology.
  • Adept at managing numerous, diverse senior and executive level stakeholders, often operating under tight timescales and managing numerous competing priorities.
  • A convincing and persuasive communicator, you will excel in driving a human-centred cultural identity that people are drawn to.
  • Commercially focused with experience managing significant budgets and understanding key financial drivers.
