Commercial, Rights & Business Affairs Manager (Lawyer)

Job Introduction

A crucial role acting as a member of the Business and Legal Affairs (“BLA”) Global Distribution team, providing business and legal affairs support as required by the APAC regional distribution businesses, with a particular focus on the India businesses.  This includes: being a vital, trusted advisor within the BBCS APAC and Global News (“GN”) teams and to the General Manager Asia and the related regional business teams; delivering first hand and first class business and legal affairs support on matters of key strategic, financial and reputational importance to relevant business; and ensuring that the highest standards of corporate governance, risk management and compliance with law, policy and regulation are observed at all times.

Role Responsibility

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Provides accurate, timely, practical and commercially focused legal advice to clients.
  • Works unsupervised and conducts a general caseload, referring upwards as required.
  • Drafts, negotiates, reviews and concludes complex contracts and other legal documentation.
  • Supervises the work of more junior members of the legal team, including line management as required, and planning/overseeing training and development  needs.
  • Provides specialist legal support to major BBCS/GN projects.
  • Undertakes regulatory, policy and advocacy work, including preparing and coordinating submissions on areas of law, regulation or policy that affect the BBCS/GN.
  • Supports dispute resolution processes and strategies.
  • Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of recent legal and policy developments in a specific area of law, and ensures that clients are aware of implications.
  • Ensures compliance with BBCS/GN policies and procedures and relevant legislation and regulation
  • Supports training and knowledge management activities. 
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues in the team and across BBCS/GN.
  • Work as part of the BLA BBCS APAC and GN teams providing commercial legal advice on legal matters, including planning, organising and managing of work activities across service/department.

Relationships

Relationships with the SVP Head of BLA APAC and Head of BLA GN and the other members of their teams will be vital.  The role sits within the wider Global Distribution BLA team, so relationships with counterparts in  other global territories be key – along with relationships with other central/specialist BLA teams based in London. 

Forging excellent working relationships with the commercial members of the relevant business teams will be fundamental to the success of this role – with General Manager Asia and their teams, along with relevant Corporate teams (Finance, HR, Operations, Comms and Marketing) being key stakeholders for this role. 

Regular, collaborative, interaction with all of these stakeholders will be fundamental to successfully prioritising and delivering on the key objectives of the business. 

The Ideal Candidate

Knowledge & Skills

  • Commercially aware with an understanding of the issues affecting BBCS/GN, broadcasting and media industry generally.
  • A track record of providing proactive, specialist, timely and authoritative legal advice and support to senior leaders and key decision-makers at the highest levels.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clarify complex issues and concepts for non-lawyers.
  • Ability to work supportively as a team member and to build and manage relationships at all levels.
  • Ability to manage diverse workstreams and to apply complex analytical and problem- solving skills under pressure.
  • Shows initiative, commitment and flexibility when faced with obstacles.
  • Motivated to develop themselves and to contribute to knowledge sharing across the team

Leadership Behaviours

  • Ability to work independently with appropriate support and reference to Managers and other Team Members
  • Ability to work closely with Sales Teams, Finance and Operations to advise on the structure of deals;
  • Ability to asses risk and offer creative solutions to meet the demands of fast paced market and changing regulatory landscape
  • Ability to manage internal clients, priorities workloads and maintain ways of working in order to effectively meet and align with business needs/strategy.  

Education & TRAINING

  • India-qualified lawyer
  • 7-10 years of experience as a qualified lawyer in a reputable law firm and/or relevant business
