Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs Executive - The Hub

Job Introduction

We are seeking a Commercial Rights and Business Affairs Executive to join the Commercial Rights and Business Affairs team in Salford.  This is a twelve month fixed term contract role (maternity cover).

BBC North, based at MediaCityUK in Salford, is the home of BBC Children’s, Radio 5 live, Learning, Religion & Ethics, BBC Sport and many other programme-making departments, producing shows as diverse as Match of the Day, Blue Peter and BBC Breakfast.

Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs (CRBA) ensures the BBC acquires, creates and distributes Intellectual Property to maximise audience value and commercial return in an increasingly digital, global and competitive marketplace. CRBA brings together all parts of the BBC to put in place platform or carriage deals, clear archive rights, negotiate deals with independents or strike programme investment deals. Innovation is at the heart of CRBA – supporting the BBC in creating new products and bringing them to market, building new partnerships, and establishing joint ventures for major content.

Role Responsibility

Reporting to the Commercial Rights and Business Affairs Manager in BBC North, you will deliver first-class business affairs support and ancillary activities.

This role blends negotiation, contracting, advisory and analytic responsibilities, particularly around: (a) English Regions Radio and TV output; Radio 5 live; BBC Audio North; and (b) projects relating to the BBC’s on-air and on-screen talent.

The role is based in Salford but occasional travel to other BBC bases in London and English Regions will be required.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will relish a role that calls on a diverse range of skills, and will as a result be highly organised, will enjoy juggling priorities and will be very proactive.  

A strong team player with good interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively, you will have experience of building and maintaining effective working relationships with a range of people across a large, complex organisation, eg Finance, HR, Legal, Commercial Rights and Business Affairs and Tax.

You will possess strong analytical skills and you will be able to simplify complex problems into component parts and deal with them systematically.  You understand the importance in a large organisation of being able to communicate your analysis effectively across a range of stakeholders.

You will be competent at dealing with the business issues that arise within a broadcast/media/technology environment, with some knowledge of contracts, copyright and clearances in respect of media production.  

You will possess a flexible approach to work, including the ability to prioritise workloads and with good attention to detail.  You will have an understanding of media production and the needs and motivations of programme makers.  Fully developed IT skills, including proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook are also essential.
