We are seeking a Commissioning Editor to join the BBC World News and bbc.com team in Global News Ltd.
BBC Global News Limited, is responsible for the BBC’s commercially funded international news services - BBC World News television channel and bbc.com, the news, sport and features online offering for an international audience. Both are funded by advertising and distribution (not the Licence Fee), and operate in English around the world (and Japanese for Japan). BBC World News has an average weekly audience of 99 million. BBC.com has 85 million monthly unique browsers outside the UK.
As Commissioning Editor you will commission and oversee a diverse range of programmes and online content for BBC World News and bbc.com. Working closely with the Head of Editorial Content, yours is a key role generating and developing creative ideas, across all platforms, including digital and social media, ensuring that our audience reach and commercial priorities are aligned with our editorial strategy. You’ll work with in-house and independent producers to create and develop ideas that meet the needs of an international audience. You’ll encourage creative innovation and identify trends and opportunities for outstanding content.
You’ll balance your editorial nous with ensuring programmes are compliant and that the financial slate you are accountable for is delivered successfully, and that commissions demonstrate value for money, quality and originality.
Are you the right candidate?
The ideal candidate will be someone who has demonstrable, senior level experience of news and world current affairs, who understands and is aware of the BBC’s commissioning priorities and can demonstrate a track record of commissioning successful content based on a thorough understanding of our audience’s needs. Experience of multi-platform working – TV documentaries and digital, including familiarity with social media - will also be key for this role.
With outstanding editorial judgement, you should have knowledge of, and an interest in, world affairs and what would appeal to an international audience. You’ll be curious and analytical, able to identify key trends but also to anticipate challenges and overcome them.
As a strong communicator you will be able to engage and inspire, particularly when presenting and speaking in public. You’ll be an ambassador of BBC Global News capable of articulating our editorial strengths to advertisers, distributors and the international media industry. You’ll have an understanding and experience of managing and motivating highly creative teams to tell important stories in the most engaging way. You will also need a thorough grounding in editorial policy issues, balancing tight budgets and of managing key talent.
