Controller, BBC Radio 3

Job Introduction

BBC Radio is the home of eight of the BBC’s national radio stations, four performing groups and the BBC Proms as well as production across radio, television and online.

BBC Radio 3 broadcasts high-quality, distinctive classical music and cultural programming, alongside regular arts and ideas programmes, jazz and world music. The station features live classical music concerts every day of the week, broadcasts every BBC Prom live, and is the most significant commissioner of new musical works in the UK. 

The Controller, BBC Radio 3 takes creative and managerial responsibility for the running of Radio 3 and the English Performing Groups - the BBC Concert Orchestra (CO), BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (PO), BBC Symphony Orchestra (SO) and BBC Singers - within the strategic aims agreed with the Director, BBC Radio. He or she is also responsible for the commissioning and scheduling of Radio 3 and the delivery of the annual BBC Proms, through the Director of the BBC Proms, who the new Controller will appoint and manage. The post holder will play a key role on the Radio Division Board.

The recruitment follows the announcement that Roger Wright is to leave Radio 3 after 15 years as Controller to become Chief Executive, Aldeburgh Music. During this period, Radio 3 has maintained a unique and distinctive offer - as both the BBC’s home of classical music and a broadcaster of arts, speech, drama, jazz and world music - to a loyal audience of around two million weekly listeners, whilst growing its digital presence and reputation for innovation.

Role Responsibility

To lead and set the strategic vision for Radio 3 and to ensure that the station continues to provide distinctive music and speech programmes of unrivalled quality, range and ambition

To oversee and manage the English Performing Groups – the BBC Concert Orchestra (CO), BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (PO), BBC Symphony Orchestra (SO) and BBC Singers

To provide central oversight and management of the BBC Proms

To lead and inspire Radio 3 staff and presenters

Are you the right candidate?

Detailed knowledge and understanding of classical music, and genuine interest in other musical genres 

Respected industry/media figure, ideally with experience gained within music, culture, media and / or broadcasting, and a demonstrable ability to schedule, programme and prioritise to the benefit of audiences

Experience of leadership within a large or complex organisation and of effectively leading large teams and developing talent
