Countryfile - Investigations Researcher

Job Introduction

This is an exciting opportunity to research the investigative, current affairs stories on Countryfile. Ideally you’ll be a journalist with a passion for rural affairs and getting to the heart of a story. You’ll have experience of digging out those stories that matter and finding exclusive story lines to bring fresh insight to the subject matter.

Role Responsibility

Working to the investigations producer, you'll play a crucial role in the investigations. Every week, 52 weeks of the year, Countryfile is at the centre of rural affairs television in the UK. BBC journalists Tom Heap and Charlotte Smith are the presenters who get to the heart of the stories which are being talked about in countryside. We want Countryfile to lead the news agenda, to dig more deeply than news can into stories which affect countryside and city alike. There are nearly 40 investigations a year which takes a lot of dedicated research. You will need to be tenacious, resilient and hard-working.

You'll be required to build relationships with the key players on the rural agenda and then use your contacts and journalistic ability to dig out exclusive stories for Countryfile which make TV gold. Knowledge of the countryside agenda is essential. Experience of factual TV is desirable but not essential. 

Are you the right candidate?

Essential

  • Good journalistic skills. 
  • Experience of delivering popular, hard-hitting current affairs. 
  • A good understanding of media law. 
  • A clear understanding of the countryside agenda and the Countryfile audience.
  • Knowledge of the main organisations and key players who shape the UK’s rural agenda - and an ability to engage with them effectively on behalf of the BBC. 
  • Exceptional communication skills for dealing with contributors and the ability to persuade and influence others.
  • Proven ability to understand complex information and translate it into compelling TV.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team. 
  • Ability to work under pressure of tight deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Organisation skills for scheduling shoots etc.
  • Proven knowledge of the BBC's editorial guidelines, H&S policy and archiving systems. 
  • Resilience, sensitivity in dealing with contributors and an ability to juggle a number of stories at any one time are also essential.    

Desirable 

  • A strong grasp of how to source and clear archive material from within the BBC and from external sources is also required.
  • Camera skills.
