BBC Monitoring (BBCM) provides news and information based on our monitoring of open source media from over 150 countries in more than 70 languages.  It is an important part of the BBC's newsgathering operation, with journalists based in the UK and in international offices, and provides content for a range of BBC platforms.

Our extensive operation enables us to provide insightful and reliable coverage of political, economic, security and media news.  Our round-the-clock monitoring of TV, radio, press, digital media and news agencies is also provided to commercial clients and the UK and US governments.

BBC Monitoring is recruiting a Digital Journalist to work as part of team covering Russia for the BBC office in Moscow.

Role Responsibility

As a Digital Journalist, you will play a pivotal role in meeting the needs of BBC Monitoring’s customers by identifying news and key insights from Russian broadcast, print, online and social media.  You will write engaging reports in English in a range of formats, including verbatim translation.

You will use a variety of tools and techniques to mine the media for information and story ideas, identify emerging trends and narratives and contribute to advance planning for coverage of key events.

Shift work is part of this role and your work patterns will often be dictated by events as they happen.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have the following attributes which are essential for this role:

  • Excellent monitoring and editing skills, with the ability to deliver output that maintains the highest journalistic standards and is consistent with BBC editorial guidelines.
  • Relevant journalistic experience, with a solid news sense and ability to identify stories that matter to BBCM’s customers.
  • Fluency in Russian and English (written and spoken), able to translate accurately and write in good idiomatic English
  • A thorough knowledge of the Russian media environment, a keen understanding of Russian politics and interest in international affairs
  • An excellent team worker and effective communicator, enthusiastic about embracing new ways of working and new technology
