Job Introduction

The BBC News website’s Australia coverage is produced by a small team based in Sydney, assisted from Singapore and London. Content produced by the website’s Australian team is used across all other editions of the BBC News website and on the BBC homepages.

The successful candidate will work on the website and its associated services, primarily in text and video. You will also work with BBC World News television and newsgathering teams based in the Singapore bureau.

Role Responsibility

In this role you will work on the Sydney-based Australia desk for BBC News Online primarily in text but also – as required - in video and audio. You will write and produce high quality multi-media news, background analysis and features on stories from around Australia. You will consistently strive to maintain knowledge of the region and create contacts within the field. You will be confident at navigating social media platforms to source original stories from new perspectives. Moreover, you will be keen to produce accessible and thought-provoking digital features which demonstrate a deep understanding of issues to relay to the BBC audiences.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Proven text journalism skills; Ability to produce clean, clear news stories, under the tightest of deadlines
  • Broad knowledge of and interest in Australian, Asia-Pacific and international affairs. 
  • Track record of reporting paired with excellent editorial judgment and flair.
  • Good knowledge of Australia’s social media landscape and popular platforms
  • An understanding of what makes good digital video and experience in producing such video is an advantage.
  • A creative approach to story framing and structure that understands how mobile devices are transforming storytelling.
