Editor, BBC Earth

Job Introduction

The BBC is the largest broadcasting corporation in the world and its world renowned natural history and science brand - BBC Earth - is currently recruiting for an Editor to help define and launch a major new website and digital offer for the brand.   The Editor will join our business based in London and will become part of one of the most exciting divisions within BBC Worldwide. They will collaborate with the Editorial, Advertising Sales, Marketing and Brand owners to ensure the online product is successful and meets agreed aims and targets for BBC Worldwide, consumers, advertisers and potential content partners.

Role Responsibility

The Editor will be a creative powerhouse, at the cutting edge of all things digital as well as having an in depth knowledge of all things natural history and science. They will know how to connect with audiences and know how to delight and excite them every day.


The Editor will be responsible for developing the global editorial vision for the new BBC Earth site, put that plan into action and ensure it is delivered on time and within budget along with the Managing Editors of Features.


They will ensure the website becomes a daily fixture for our audience. Commissioning stories, blogs, video and other creative digital products that meet the BBC’s editorial guidelines and the high standards our audience associates with our natural history and science programming.


As an Editor they will liaise with the Channels team and Brands team to ensure the site meets the editorial objectives, marketing objectives and tone of the brands and linear output. They will line manage Deputy Editors and Content Producers [potentially in multiple regions] that work for the site.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have significant experience as an editor along with experience in a similar role. You will have broad knowledge and understanding of digital journalism as well as knowledge of the law and ethics as they apply.  The successful candidate will also have experience of natural history and science journalism along with a demonstrated passion for the subject. Extensive digital experience including knowledge of a CMS, HTML, Photoshop familiarity and use of social media will be an essential for this position along with strong verbal, written, communication and presentation skills. Management skills will be an advantage for this position.
