BBC Content encompasses all of the BBC's network TV and Radio output.  With an already world-class arts and music offering, we’re making changes that will enable us to expand the reach of our Arts and Music programming.  Ultimately ensuring the widest possible audience can access distinctive, world-beating content across our services.

We’re creating a new arts and classical music genre in TV, under the leadership of Patrick Holland who takes on an expanded remit as Director of Factual, Arts & Classical Music.  This alignment of arts and classical music in television will bring specialist depth, modern storytelling and enhanced ambition to our commissioning.  This change has created an exciting new opportunity for a Head of Arts and Classical Music to lead the new BBC Arts and Classical Music team in Television.

Role Responsibility

You will work closely with the Director of Factual, Arts & Classical Music to construct and deliver the commissioning strategy for BBC Arts and Classical Music, building and maintaining a strategic relationship with the supplier base at a senior creative level that generates, develops and nurtures the best ideas.  Underpinned by a clear vision for making the BBC the world leader in arts and classical music output.

You will lead the commissioning of a full range of innovative and distinctive content based on a sophisticated analysis of target audience needs and in line with agreed budgets and regulatory requirements.  Adept at creative collaboration, you will be keen to work with commissioning teams across documentary, history and other genres; sharing best in class insights and ideas to make the very best modern boxset documentary and performance content.  Your team and the wider sector will look to you for your creative judgement and insights

The Ideal Candidate

This is an outstanding opportunity for a true expert in the field of Arts and Classical Music Television.  A creative figurehead with programme making expertise you will bring a track record in attracting the best programme-makers and nurturing new talent (on and off-screen).  Committed to our diversity and inclusion objectives you will have a rich understanding of how to reach wider audiences with our arts and classical music offer.

To ensure success it is vital that you have experience in leading creative teams and you will be able to demonstrate your achievements in identifying excellence and driving quality in commissions.  Audiences are at the heart of everything we do so you need to have a deep understanding of changing audience consumption patterns (particularly on VOD and SVOD platforms) and show evidence of creating diverse content and developing new on-screen talent.
