The Documentary, Arts and History Unit at BBC Studios is the home of high quality, thought provoking, Grierson and BAFTA award-winning factual television. Powerful storytelling is at the heart of what we do, with output ranging from observational access series to landmark history and arts. With teams based in London and Glasgow, the unit works with the very best filmmaking talent to produce critically acclaimed shows such as, Earth’s Sacred Wonders, Thatcher, Inside the Foreign Office, Landward, Imagine, The Met: Policing London, The Secret History of My Family and Louis Theroux. We are a film hub seeking to attract auteur directors whilst providing a safe place in which they can do their best work.

The role of Senior Head of Content Production will provide creative leadership to the production teams across all platforms and play a major role in contributing to, and developing, the content strategy for Factual content across BBC Studios. They will provide and deliver on a clear, bespoke creative strategy for Arts, History and Documentaries bringing their own vision to the opportunity with the ability to leverage BBC Studios’ unique and trusted access to bring the most intriguing stories to a broad audience.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a senior leader to develop and execute a creative strategy for Arts, History and Documentaries with our British terrestrial clients; the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, for digital platforms such as You Tube, Amazon or Spotify and for specialist channels in all major international territories.

The Candidate

With an extensive network across broadcasters and 3rd parties and a creative breadth that encompasses specialist factual through to more broadly popular subject matter, the Head of Documentaries, Arts and History will cover a range of output from short form digital content, single films to major series and formats that can travel around the world. They will draw up and deliver to a content strategy for Documentary, History and Arts, ensuring a strong global pipeline of award winning content for a range of domestic, US and Global broadcasters building new and valuable IP for the BBC Group

They will be an experienced senior leader who is a magnet for talent on both sides of the camera, who knows what’s needed to attract, encourage and grow production talent to ensure the very best ideas are brought forward and the highest quality of work produced.

Managing a team of senior creatives with shared slates, targets & objectives they will ensure synergies are created to enable the sharing of ideas and create a clear editorial vision for the lifecycle of factual content across all platforms coupled with a commitment to creating a diverse staff base that reflects our audiences.

The successful candidate will have an outstanding track record in large content production business with extensive experience gained both domestically and internationally, of pitching and winning commissions from multiple broadcasters / platforms. This experience will be matched with proven commercial acumen and the ability to transform a business in terms of commercial success across all content platforms.
