Job Introduction

The BBC is seeking a Head of Journalism, BBC News US, responsible for all digital output across BBC and third-party platforms.  Head of Journalism is the Senior Leader of the expanding BBC News digital team based in Washington, DC. Editorial lead on development of the BBC News offers on and other international platforms, working closely with BBC Studios on growing audiences, impact and commercial revenue. Reporting to Digital News Editor of BBC News. Responsible for building a world-class culture of digital growth, bold creativity and an inclusive culture.

You will be working closely with other senior leaders based in London and across the world, and with our commercial colleagues in BBC Studios. Strong record in co-creation and leading through partnerships is required.

  • As a Senior Leader in BBC News’ digital department, you will be leading and delivering an exciting strategy for radical growth in international markets.
  • As a Senior Leader you will represent the value of the BBC, and further ambition, accountability, collaboration, data-led decision making and a modern culture where everyone thrive and grow.
  • You will provide excellent editorial leadership of BBC News, also beyond your own team, defined by vision, ambition, integrity, strategic understanding, and – of course - impeccable judgement.
  • You will lead and manage your team, including recruitment, training, organization, feedback and performance management, creating a world-class culture of digital innovation, bold creativity and inclusivity.
  • As the senior manager you will oversee budget and production for your team and their output.

Are you the right candidate?

You will be a convincing and persuasive communicator, required to engage and influence teams, as well as senior stakeholders, able to establish effective and collaborative relations across BBC departments, and external agencies/stakeholders where required and be able to manage numerous and diverse senior and executive level stakeholders, often operating under tight timescales and managing competing priorities.

You will we be an expert in the field, providing professional leadership and acting as a role model to teams and colleagues and be functional expert with broad and comprehensive understanding of theories, systems and practices relevant to their functional area.

You will have awareness of current markets, trends and issues within the US media industry, and deep knowledge of US output across the whole of the BBC, as well as that of competitors

You will be Internally or externally recognised source for creative thinking and innovation with thorough understanding of the way in which output is commissioned, financed and produced.

You will have broad and comprehensive understanding of BBC’s legal, contractual agreements and regulations as they apply to programme making, broadcasting and digital media and experience in managing significant budgets and understanding key financial drivers.

You will have a strong track record of leading news teams to deliver high impact journalism to digital audiences and have a clear vision of how BBC News can win in the crowded US news market, and the strategy to deliver it.

Be able to demonstrable understanding of how digital storytelling and product innovation work together to meet audience goals

You will have experience of building and managing diverse, inclusive teams, and developing new talent and with proven ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams and time zones to ensure US audiences benefit from the global reporting firepower of BBC News.
