Head of Multiplatform Commissioning, BBC Scotland

Job Introduction

This is a key senior role, critical to the success of BBC Scotland.  Responsible for commissioning strategy across all platforms it will be an ambassador for the BBC, representing BBC Scotland both internally and externally.

The role will have accountability for commissioning spend across all genres and platforms, maximising opportunities to achieve the greatest impact and deliver more for audiences in Scotland and across the UK.

This role will be responsible for constructing and delivering the content strategy for BBC Scotland and building and maintaining a strategic relationship with the independent and in-house suppliers at a senior creative level that generates, develops and nurtures the best ideas and leads to the delivery of outstanding content for audiences.  It will provide leadership for the development and delivery of the new BBC Scotland Television channel announced in February 2017.

Reporting to the Director of BBC Scotland this role will commission a full range of informative, educative and entertaining content, embracing innovation and challenge across all genres and platforms based on a sophisticated analysis of targeted audience needs and expectation.

Role Responsibility

Formulate and shape the BBC Scotland content strategy and editorial priorities across all media platforms that optimise return on investment and deliver enhanced audience reach, share and appreciation.  In so doing maximise opportunities through coordinated commissioning approaches across BBC ALBA, BBC Scotland, Radio Scotland, Radio nan Gàidheal, Online and Social Media.

Fully accountable for ensuring that commissioning decisions are made in accordance with the BBC Scotland content strategy in a transparent and equitable manner across both BBC in-house production, BBC Studios and external partners.

Work closely with colleagues across Marketing & Audiences to inform commissioning decisions and ensure that content and marketing priorities and spend are fully aligned

Identify the best approach to working with Presentation and the Archive to ensure a fully joined up and strategic approach to content commissioning.

To share strategic priorities and long term planning with network commissioning colleagues based in Scotland and London to ensure a joined up approach and maximise co-commissioning opportunities

To build and develop close working relationships with internal teams across the BBC and external suppliers/partners in the industry, ensuring that contribution and perspective from all areas are taken into account for decision making.

To work in a joined up way with commissioners across Nations & Regions  to maximise opportunities in genres achieving greatest impact to achieve a positive impact on portrayal; for example across the Scottish / NI / Ireland corridor.

To ensure commissions are based on a sound understanding of cost, quality, delivery date, contestability, rights exploitation and funding needs.

To pioneer new formats and innovations in content, nurturing the creative process in the development of ideas, encouraging risk taking, innovation and diversity and giving constructive feedback.

To be accountable for driving business development and BBC Scotland’s commercial strategy for content, developing new and existing external partnerships and opportunities to attract new external funding.

To be fully accountable for commissioning and other content-related spend with the support of finance and business management colleagues.

To work with Director, BBC Scotland to identify the best organisational structure and design to facilitate a strategic approach to commissioning strategy.

As a key senior leader, to provide outstanding values based leadership to a wide range of teams across BBC Scotland.

The Ideal Candidate

Leading industry figure with extensive experience gained in a multi-platform environment and a track record for delivering exceptional programming.

Sound understanding of commissioning principles, with a clear strategy and vision for developing a range of content across all platforms, ensuring distinctiveness, portrayal and representation.

A knowledge of multiplatform content and of user experience of platforms across Television, Radio, Online and Social;

A deep understanding of contemporary and historic Scotland, in all its diversity, of changing audience consumption patterns and the ability to connect BBC Scotland’s output to audience needs.

Significant understanding of current trends and issues within the broadcasting industry and awareness of output across the whole of the BBC, as well as that of competitors.

Demonstrable experience of developing and commissioning innovative popular programmes ahead of competitor broadcasters.

In-depth knowledge and extensive range of contacts in terms of key independent and BBC talent, their agents and representatives.

Outstanding communication skills and ability to foster relationships with a wide range of internal and external contacts, with the skill to relay contentious decisions without impacting on key relationships to promote creative development.

Strong evidence of a commitment to creating diverse content and to BBC diversity strategy & policies.

Able to adopt a cross-media perspective whilst ensuring service distinctiveness.

Considerable experience of long-term planning and managing people, teams and resources around complex schedules and budgets.
