Role Responsibility

As Head of Programme, you will lead thedesign, development and implementation of a global portfolio that includes activity in at least three countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia as well as a global policy and learning programme. You will provide strategic leadership across this diverse portfolio, balancing competing priorities and advising individual project strands and stakeholders across a 10 partner consortium.

Reporting to the Regional Director, Africa, you willalso work closely with the Head of Partnerships to optimise the strategic potential of this partnership programme. You'll develop close working relationships with Country Directors and colleagues in our Research, Policy and Advisory teams to implement the programme andlead the day-to-day donor relationship with DFID as well as with all partners and external stakeholders.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Strong experience of running complex international development projects, preferably in a range of international contexts
  • Significant knowledge and experience of working constructively with a range of stakeholders to develop and deliver joint international development programmes (e.g. via consortia)
  • Sound financial knowledge, including significant experience of setting and managing large (1m+) multi-year donor-funded budgets to deliver against commitments
  • Experience working with UK Government donors and up-to-date understanding of donor compliance requirements, systems and processes
  • Strong experience developing and working with a range of results frameworks, including good technical understanding of monitoring and evaluation approaches and standards
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a proven track record in forming effective relationships with a range of local and international development partners
  • Proven track record of building and managing external relationships as well as working at a high level in a representative role
  • Experience of working in the national or international policy arena and a sound understanding of evidence-based influencing and policy-making
  • Strong technical understanding of the media development sector
  • Background in media or media development would be an advantage
  • In-depth knowledge of one or more of the countries/regions in which BBC Media Action is working would be an advantage
  • Experience working with and managing people remotely and with people whose first language is not English
