BBC Kyrgyz is part of BBC World Service, one of the world’s leading multi-media news organisations providing international news and analysis to a global audience. Journalists will increasingly be expected to work closely with the rest of the BBC, building relationships that will be mutually beneficial and which will enable BBC Kyrgyz to take an active role in the overall BBC coverage of Kyrgyzstan working under the supervision of Senior Journalists.
BBC Kyrgyz is a multi-platform department so Journalists are expected to work across radio, TV, online and social media.
We are looking for a Journalist to join our team based in Bishkek. This is a continuing contract.
Reporting to the Editor for the service, your role is to research, write, translate, edit or adapt items, stories or programme material for BBC Kyrgyz to find contributors and interviewees as well as other sources of material and actuality as appropriate. This will involve maintaining professional journalistic standards of accuracy, impartiality and fair dealing and adhering to the BBC’s Editorial guidelines. Alongside this, you will also be responsible for a moving story, amending and updating material as required, which includes thinking through and around editorial problems, developing realistic alternative strategies and approaches.
Are you the right candidate?
The successful candidate will be a fluent Kyrgyz speaker (written and spoken), with a broadcast standard level of English. Demonstrable experience as a journalist in a current affairs capacity and relevant to the target area is essential, together with a broad knowledge of production techniques. The ability to write, adapt and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media is important. You will have an in depth up to date knowledge of current affairs in the target area (Central Asian countries and former Soviet Union countries) and in the wider international sphere.
