Job Introduction

Sport+ will grow our storytelling beyond live coverage and provide greater value to our audience across a number of different platforms.  We want to generate more impact around our major events by seizing cross-platform opportunities and increasing collaboration.  Sport+ works towards key departmental strategic aims of reaching new, younger and more diverse audiences, more frequently. We are looking for a Sport+ Journalist to discover and develop compelling and distinctive stories to work across a number of outlets, including long form for BBC iPlayer.  The successful candidate will have a strong journalistic background, with a track record and instinct for unearthing untold stories that resonate with underserved audiences.  This is an opportunity to help shape new propositions and work with audience planning and marketing to help fuel creativity and land content to the right audience, at the right time, on the right platform.  Our aim is to drive frequency with more usage on iPlayer, increasing time spent by retaining audiences beyond the big live moments, driving referrals across platforms and diversifying the types of content we offer. 

We want BBC Sport’s output to reflect and understand the audiences we serve - for example, the different geographical regions of the UK and the experience of people from underrepresented groups (eg people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds, people with lived experience of disability, individuals within the LGBTQ+ community and those from lower socio economic groups).  We are therefore actively seeking individuals with skills or experience that can help contribute towards ensuring we maximise the diversity of our coverage and content.

Role Responsibility

This role will support the Sport+ Content Editor and work alongside the Sport+ team.

You will be expected to source new and relevant stories with in-depth research and development. 

Establish and develop key relationships with contributors and partners outside of the BBC.

The successful candidate will be involved in productions; helping with interviews, filming and post production 

You will be responsible for providing written treatments 

Run and contribute to idea sessions

Take part in audience testing and use data to help inform the commissioning process 

You may be required to contribute supporting written content for BBC Sport online 

You will handle multiple projects under tight and evolving deadlines

This role will be responsible for contributing to Sport+ ideation and collaborating across the division. 

The Ideal Candidate

We need a self-starter with initiative and a curiosity to learn more about our audience and a genuine desire to make a difference at the BBC. 

You will have a strong awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion across our output and workforce.  

You must have a genuine desire to shift the dial and make change, be fully embracing of an inclusive approach and eager to seek out new ways of reaching a diverse audience with relevant and relatable content.

You will need strong journalistic instincts and proven editorial judgement.

We require experience in video production and writing for online 

This role is for someone who has a genuine passion for in-depth storytelling.  

It is essential to have the skills to build strong relationships with colleagues in BBC Sport and more widely across the BBC.  

A good knowledge and understanding of the major digital platforms and how they can be exploited is essential.
