Junior Camera Operator, BBC One Landmark series, BBC Studios NHU

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

BBC Studios Natural History Unit (NHU) is acknowledged as the leading maker of television and radio programmes on wildlife and natural history anywhere in the world. This is for an ambitious new NHU major landmark project for BBC1 delivering in 2023.

All wildlife content is acquired from freelance operators; there are no BBC staff positions in this category.  Consequently, on completion you will be released to compete on the freelance market for work, either from the NHU or elsewhere. This opportunity is aimed at those with sufficient relevant skills and experience to enable rapid progress to full professional competence.

You will need to include a link to your showreel as part of your application. In addition to this, complete sequences will be advantageous.

*Please note if you do not include a link to your showreel we will not consider your application*.

Role Responsibility

The BBC NHU runs a 12 month Junior Camera Operator scheme that aims to develop an emerging camera operator by providing experience for them working alongside existing experts in their field and increasing their ability to operate at the very highest level of natural history filming.

After the success of previous schemes we wish to select a further position to embed with the production team of a major landmark Natural History series. Capturing in UHD and making use of cutting-edge camera technologies, this is an exciting opportunity to learn about the latest wildlife production and photographic processes as well as preparing work in the production offices, advising, testing and prepping kit as well as providing assistance and shooting in the field.

The Ideal Candidate

  •
You must be able to provide evidence of highly proficient camerawork, and ideally have broadcast or corporate credits.
  • We are looking for someone with a gifted eye who has the potential to compose exquisite images.
  • We are keen to hear from anyone who is already shooting at 4k. You must have a solid understanding of complex production technology and filming kit, and demonstrate a strong interest in new filming equipment and techniques. Knowledge of managing media on location and post production workflows is also of value.
  • Ideally you will be Bristol-based and when not abroad filming, be embedded in the production team and work regular office hours. We will consider being based overseas depending on the location and experience of the candidate
  • Strong research, planning and organisational skills as well as experience in setting up animal behavioural sequences will be of value. Importantly, you must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.  You will be able to demonstrate a proven ability to build strong relationships with contributors and work effectively within a team.
  • You will need to have experience of spending prolonged periods of time in the field, observing and filming animal behaviour, and of building strong sequences through images, rather than just shooting scenics.
  • The role will include a degree of research to be approached with real scientific rigour. When in the field and shooting, an appreciation for wildlife behaviour is key- from the macro to the mega fauna.
  • A knowledge and experience of use of movi / ronin and drones is desirable
  • You must have the right to work in the UK.
  • Foreign languages are an advantage but not essential.

  • A clear, demonstrable passion for the natural world and wildlife is a must.
