Lawyer (Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs Manager)
We are looking for an experienced qualified lawyer to join the Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs (‘CRBA’) team supporting the BBC’s Design & Engineering Division (including the R&D department) , in the BBC’s external dealings with digital platforms, device manufacturers and social media platforms. This is a permanent role, based in London.
The team provides a comprehensive legal & business affairs service and is responsible for developing and managing relationships with external partners to increase the BBC’s reach, ensuring BBC content is available to audiences on a wide variety of broadcast and digital platforms and devices. Our team also works with many different external providers to support the BBC’s social media presence and the BBC’s involvement in new and emerging technologies such as virtual reality.
CRBA brings together all parts of the BBC to put in place platform or carriage deals, clear archive rights, negotiate deals with content suppliers or strike programme investment deals. Innovation is at the heart of CRBA – supporting the BBC in creating new products , bringing them to market, and building new partnerships. This in turn relies on our deep understanding of rights, technology, content and the media market.
You will support and advise on all day-to-day legal matters including intellectual property rights, contract and commercial law, Data Protection and privacy issues on the internet etc. In addition, you’ll draft, negotiate, review, and advise on complex technology, licensing and outsourcing agreements with a variety of third-parties, as well as supporting the commercial supplier management and service assurance teams who are responsible for the successful delivery and operation of the services.
Are you the right candidate?
A qualified lawyer with a minimum of 3 years’ PQE, you’ll have a depth of relevant experience gained in private practice and/or a specialist in-house department, dealing with the broadcast/media/technology sector with exposure to areas of commercial, IP and IT law.
An enthusiastic, flexible, collaborative and proactive approach to working with colleagues, and negotiating deals to develop positive ongoing external and internal relationships.
Technology literate with an evident interest and working knowledge of relevant technologies such as online video, social media, IPTV, mobile media, enabling functionality such as search, personalisation, application development and digital rights management and their relevance within the broadcast/media sector.
Sophisticated and succinct drafting skills combined with the ability to communicate lucidly and concisely for a non-legal audience are essential. Significant experience of negotiating and maintaining complex and multi-faceted contracts within the technology and new media industries is also required.
