Commercial Rights and Business Affairs (CRBA) exists in the BBC to create, acquire and exploit intellectual property to maximise audience value and commercial return in an increasingly global, digital and commercial marketplace.
In order to support the Director General’s ambition aims for the BBC’s Next Chapter, CRBA is undergoing a period of significant and transformative change, and has identified a critical need to develop, drive and enable digital thinking and innovation across the whole of the BBC. This is a twelve month fixed term contract role based in London.
In its connecting role across the BBC, CRBA supports our Design + Engineering (D+E) Division to create and bring to market new and innovative products and services. This requires new partnerships, frameworks and licensing arrangements, which in turn means we need lawyers with a deep understanding of the digital, technology, content and media markets.
Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs (CRBA) ensures the BBC acquires, creates and distributes Intellectual Property to maximise audience value and commercial return in an increasingly digital, global and competitive marketplace. CRBA brings together all parts of the BBC to put in place platform or carriage deals, clear archive rights, negotiate deals with independents or strike programme investment deals. Innovation is at the heart of CRBA – supporting the BBC in creating new products and bringing them to market, building new partnerships, and establishing joint ventures for major content.
We are able to offer an exciting opportunity for a lawyer with digital and technology experience to work supporting the BBC’s development, acquisition and use of new technologies. Specifically, we need people with a strong track record and proven ability to support current and emerging digital products and services, negotiate partnerships and collaborations, license our digital assets and technology to other organisations, procure digital services from technology suppliers and negotiate with emerging technology partners. Innovation, data, personalisation and data privacy are central and critical to our work.
The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a qualified lawyer with:
- Proven experience of drafting and negotiating technology agreements in the broadcast, media and digital and technology markets.
- Proven knowledge of contract, IP and IT and data protection considerations for content creation and consumer facing digital services.
- A high level of technology literacy, including familiarity with streaming video services, social media, mobile media and functionality including search, personalisation, e-analytics, application development, software as a service, machine learning and data management.
- A progressive approach to negotiating deals to develop external relationships to support research and innovation.
- Excellent drafting skills, including an ability to write clearly and concisely using a tone of voice suitable for non-legal stakeholders.
- Significant experience of negotiating complex and multi-faceted contracts within the technology and emerging media industries.
- A collaborative approach, positive attitude, curious mind and willingness to learn as well as a willingness to simplify our contracting processes and templates.
You will provide legal, commercial and business affairs support on a variety of transactional deals, and provide advice across a range of legal matters including contract law, intellectual property rights, regulatory and policy compliance, procurement, licensing, data protection and privacy issues.
This will include drafting, negotiating and advising on complex technology, research, licensing and distribution agreements with a variety of organisations, as well as managing risk.
We are seeking Post-Qualified Experience of between 2 and 7 years. But more important is a strong track record in dealing with new technologies, high levels of energy and curiosity, the appetite to draft in language that anyone can understand and the ability to work in a flexible and collaborative way.
