The BBC Somali Service is the pre-eminent international broadcaster in the Somali language with journalists and reporters based in London, Kenya, Somalia and the US. Broadcasting since 1957 the service now offers the most trusted Somali news service on radio, digital (bbcsomali.com), mobile and social media to our audiences in the Horn of Africa and across the diaspora. And we have exciting plans to launch TV news bulletins in 2016. Our aim is to develop and deliver a service strategy which ensures we maximise our editorial impact in Africa and beyond.
You will be expected to research, present, write, edit and adapt original stories or programme material for all Multimedia output. Finding contributors, interviewees and other sources of material will be a large part of your role. You will be responsible for thinking through and around editorial problems and offering ideas for items, programmes/seasons and actively contributing to the editorial planning process. In this position, you will be expected to conduct interviews either in the studio or on location as well as performing live on audio or video with or without a script, live or in recording sessions.
The Ideal Candidate
You’ll have complete comprehension of written and spoken English and Somali. You will bring a proven track record of producing material for radio, TV and online. You’ll have substantial, recent and relevant paid employment as a journalist. You will also have the ability to write, adapt and translate with accuracy, clarity and the style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media.
This position requires a solid current knowledge of African news and current affairs and an understanding of audience needs across the continent. You will be experienced with reporting, in the field and on African political, economic, sports, technology, health and entertainment issues. You’ll be able to demonstrate a good range of contacts for interview purposes.
