The BBC is the largest broadcasting corporation in the world and the Brazilian Service is currently seeking an Editor to join the team based in Sao Paulo. BBC Brasil is part of BBC Global News, a multi-platform provider of news and analysis in 29 languages. The Brazilian team provides content in text, video and audio mainly through our website (www.bbcbrasil.com), as well as syndication to partners in Brazil and social media. Our main challenge is to increase our audience in Brazil as well as providing an authoritative coverage of the country to the BBC's international audience. The team, led by the Brazil editor based in London, is divided in two newsrooms and works in close collaboration with other BBC departments.
As the Sao Paulo Multimedia Editor, you will be working closely with the Sao Paulo Executive Editor. A key objective for you will be to ensure that BBC Brasil reaches multiple targets such as increasing the site’s direct access via desktop and mobile platforms and enhancing its impact on partner sites, social media platforms and across the wider BBC. You will have both Editorial and Managerial responsibilities that include providing editorial guidance and supervising production work as well as maintaining high standards of work through briefings, feedback, and scrutiny of scripts, and creating a good working atmosphere within the team.
You will work with the London Current Affairs Editor to plan current and future coverage and editorial strategy of the Service, taking into account conditions in the target area and external factors. This is a very exciting position and you will have the opportunity to represent BBC Brasil and the Americas Hub, whenever requested to do so, at various BBC forums.
Are you the right candidate?
The successful candidate will have a full command and up to date knowledge of Brazilian Portuguese (first or equivalent) and will be fluent in English and able to communicate effectively. You will have substantial experience as a multimedia journalist for the target area and extensive experience of leading a team in a journalistic environment. You will have the ability to manage change in a world where the media constantly has to adapt to new working methods.
Extensive knowledge of the internet and production on other digital platforms and how to exploit them for the BBC’s purposes is essential for this role. You will need an extensive understanding of Brazilian, Latin American and international current affairs. You must also demonstrate an in depth knowledge of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda and a wider interest in the strategy of the BBC as a whole. The ability to provide authoritative analysis about Brazilian affairs in English for both radio and TV would be an advantage.
