News Editor, BBC Sinhala Service

Job Introduction

BBC World Service is an international multimedia broadcaster, part of BBC News, delivering a wide range of language and regional services and working increasingly with other parts of BBC News to serve global audiences.  It uses multiple platforms to reach its weekly audience of 438 million globally.  BBC News Sinhala is a digital news service, providing international regional and Sri Lanka news that is relevant to our audience.

We have a brand new opportunity for a senior leader to oversee and develop our Sinhala service, now based in Delhi.  This position will command excellent leadership and communication skills and a first-class understanding of the digital world.

This role is open to non-Indian citizens.

Role Responsibility

Reporting to the Senior News Editor for BBC’s Asia Hub, this is a senior editorial role requiring a clear vision on how to take the service forward in Delhi.  You will be tasked with maximising the impact of Sinhala news and current affairs, increasing the viewing time of existing audiences and attracting new ones.  You will provide clear editorial and creative leadership for a team that makes impact through original journalism and creative storytelling. 

You will be expected to run the online news team, coordinate and promote our stories on social media and commission digital video.  You will need experience and knowledge of these areas and know how each area of the digital platforms complement each other.  You will also be responsible for managing a team based in Delhi and Colombo, helping them learn new skills.  We expect you to set ambitious objectives for staff, ensuring they are achieved through regular feedback and discussion.  You will also be responsible for the service’s budget, recruitment, training and staff development.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be an experienced senior programme maker with evidence of highly developed journalistic skills and editorial decision-making.  Fluency in Sinhala (written and spoken) and a broadcast-standard level of English is essential.  The role requires resilience; confidence; assured leadership with excellent communication skills; an enthusiasm for collaboration with other services in the BBC and a full commitment to managing and developing a brilliant team of digital journalists.  You must be able to demonstrate a highly developed news and current affairs judgement from extensive experience of broadcast journalism (ideally tv, online and / or digital) in a senior capacity. 

You will have a track record in making major decisions on matters of editorial sensitivity with authority and under pressure.  An understanding of how to maximise audience impact on digital platforms is important.  You will have the ability to manage the finances of complex programme budgets.  A passion for a healthy work culture based on transparency, openness, collaboration, trust and respect is fundamental.
