The BBC World Service remains the leading international broadcaster in Africa, reaching millions of audiences across all platforms and Social Media.  As part of the world’s largest broadcaster, the BBC Africa Service broadcasts a daily mix of news and current affairs programmes through radio, TV and digital platforms to very large and audiences in West Africa and beyond.

We have an opportunity for a Picture Editor to join our team in Lagos on a fixed term contract until September 2021.

Role Responsibility

A Picture Editor’s role in the Africa Service is to create highly crafted television and digital output using the very best video and audio available through BBC Newsgathering, broadcast partners and user generated content.  In this process, you will assess material against productions' editorial and presentation requirements.  You will also edit the available material to meet these requirements and transmission, publishing or production deadlines as well as to the professional standards required by BBC News Editing.

You will work closely with a team of producers and reporters, or to a script, brief or outline of the requirements and the story’s content.  You will work on script ideas, story structuring, ordering and appropriate use of library material alongside sync selection and picture treatments.  You will select pictures and sound and ensure an overall successful editing process.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have first class knowledge of craft editing and relevant television production techniques.  You will have a detailed understanding of transmission procedures and talkback techniques.  Experience in recording and transmitting pictures and sound in all broadcast formats is essential.  You must be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of the systems that support edit platforms such as FCPX, Dira, OpenMedia, Jupiter and File Transfer.  A keen interest in News and Current Affairs is important.
