Producer, Voice-First Formats

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

Just like the mobile phone before it, the way we consume everything – including core BBC services such as news, music, factual, drama – may change in big and small ways because of the new devices and platforms known as Voice and Conversational User Interfaces. From Alexa to Siri, Google Assistant to Cortana, the way we interact with the internet is changing, and fast. Assistants are rapidly becoming a part of everyday life for millions of our consumers and are now the fastest growing medium for interaction with the internet across the country.

Just like those that invented new formats like the podcast, box set or social video, we need to respond to this new creative challenge and this is a chance to get involved at the very beginning.  This time it’s about modelling interactions between humans and machines: what kind of music, news, etc. can we offer to audiences who can talk back?

This role will suit a creative mind with a high degree of interest in new technologies and digital publishing.  You will need to work effectively with designers and engineers,  engaging widely across Voice products to pioneer new formats and shape interaction with the BBC at both an organisational and audience level through assistants such as Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, and Cortana.

Role Responsibility

As Producer, you will be part of our Voice First Formats cluster, an innovation “lab” that works closely with Design and Engineering colleagues to develop, test and learn editorial voice concepts and ideas for the wider BBC, working across all genres, for example news, current affairs, factual, drama, comedy, music, food and many others. As we begin to launch experimental content, we will also be engaging with the wider creative industry to bring in new ideas and commissions.

The job blends creativity, organisation and leadership. It will suit a Producer with a strong awareness of technology and a rich understanding of the creative possibilities of BBC output in relation to Voice products. You will be responsible for leading projects and managing some colleagues directly, but also building relationships across different business functions. You will have proven ability to take a bold creative vision and see it through the hurdles of advanced digital publishing.

Are you the right candidate?

This is an exceptionally creative role for a Producer from any discipline such as video, audio  or digital, with an interest a new technology. The successful candidate will work as a content creator, helping us to pioneer new BBC formats in the exciting new digital arena known as Voice.

Candidates will need to be highly organised and able to work well across different functions and teams, have the confidence to draw out and push forward bold new ideas, show they can quickly adapt to changing circumstances, and be prepared to bring fresh thinking into the way the BBC publishes to Voice platforms.

If you have any particular genre specialism, we would be interested to know more about this in your application.

The role may also involve travel between BBC sites, and to third parties in the UK and/or abroad.
