Producers: Newcastle - BBC England

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

BBC England, one of the four BBC Nations, is re-inventing its TV offer for the audience. As part of that creative refresh we will launch a brand-new current affairs series on BBC One and we are recruiting a dynamic, creative and diverse team to help us.

This new series will transmit in a BBC One prime-time slot and will deliver a fresh approach to peak-time current affairs. It will reflect the lives of our audience from Cumbria to Cornwall, Manchester to Margate. It will tell the big stories that matter, in an accessible, actuality rich, immersive way.

The team will be based in six regional hubs across England and will be run by an executive team at the series headquarters in Birmingham.

The ambition is for a new series with high production values, popular appeal, warmth, accessibility and investigative journalism - with a clear, contemporary visual style. We will tell compelling stories with a deep understanding of the issues our audience is talking about.

We are seeking individuals with the skills to help us deliver great content, maximise the impact of that content and a commitment to understanding and reflecting the stories and experiences of our diverse audience in England. This is an opportunity to launch a bold and ground-breaking new programme, delivering 120 films a year for BBC One from six locations across England. The series is reputationally critical to BBC One and BBC England and we are recruiting a team to deliver on that challenge.

Role Responsibility

You will have responsibility for the creation of distinctive 30min films that reflect our diverse audience.  You will have control on every aspect of production, creating an environment where the talents of those on and off screen can flourish.  You will be accountable for the success of the finished films and will steer the production from beginning to completion.

We expect our producers to lead, motivate and support the team, ensuring that the editorial vision is communicated and understood, developing and managing positive working relationships.

You will be accountable for the compliance and delivery of content, acting within BBC Editorial, Legal and Health & Safety guidelines and, where relevant, liaising with our Rights teams to ensure copyright and contracts adhere to BBC regulations.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a long-form current affairs and/or factual TV filmmaker with a track record of producing distinctive content  – an autonomous, creative self-starter who can develop a film from conception to delivery on time and on budget.

With responsibility for the delivery of 30min films, you will need sound journalistic skills and instincts, a creative vision/ambition and experience of influencing, negotiating and communicating effectively with a wide range of people including talent.

You will be able to demonstrate your ability to develop creative ideas from conception to final film, including planning, scripting and shaping.  You should be experienced at every level of production and have specialist production knowledge with the proven ability to shoot (to broadcast standard) and edit (to rough cut standard) using a range of tools/kit.

You should have the initiative, tenacity and ability to see how your work fits in with the wider needs of the team whilst bringing out creative ideas in others and have the proven ability to lead, inspire and motivate all members of the team through various stages of the production process.

We have a commitment to making a better culture at the BBC and will be looking for individuals to demonstrate how they identify with the BBC employee commitments and values.

You will have up-to-date knowledge of the BBC's diverse audiences and their needs and expectations, and use this to shape creative and engaging output.  Evidence of strong editorial judgement and a thorough knowledge of editorial policy and legal guidelines should also be demonstrated.
