Job Introduction

Long Form Audio is part of the Long Form Audio Department in BBC News.  We make award winning documentaries and podcasts, debates, built magazine programmes and live programmes; our output is heard extensively on Radio 4, World Service Radio and Radio 5 Live.  This role is based in the Salford Unit who produce the award winning strand File on 4 as well as a range of high profile Podcast series’, investigation packages for 5 Live and BBC Sounds and ad hoc documentaries.

Long Form Audio is looking for a Production Manager with a track record of working on Long Form documentary and factual programmes,  as well as being confident in managing and scheduling complicated productions and teams.

Role Responsibility

Working in partnership with the Editorial team and alongside the Senior Editorial team, the Production Manager is responsible for managing the output on a day-to-day basis. The Production Manager liaises with a variety of colleagues from across the BBC and externally, suppliers, freelancers, artists and agents.  The Production Manager ensures accurate budgeting, forecasting and production planning in a demanding and changing environment.  The Production Manager will be responsible for creating and managing complex schedules across multiple strands to ensure the team are working in an efficient and effective way.  They will demonstrate effective team management skills with the ability to lead, develop and motivate staff and work collaboratively within a diverse team.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate must have:

  • Demonstrable working knowledge of end-to-end multi-platform productions, including radio, long form documentary content, investigations & podcasts - with a level of technical understanding to enable the most efficient and cost effective production of content.
  • Demonstrable business and finance skills, able to create, forecast and manage production resources and budgets.  
  • Demonstrates team management skills with the ability to lead, develop and motivate their PM team.
  • Demonstrates strong organisational and planning skills which have been applied to complex scheduling of productions and resources. 
  • Demonstrates the ability to manage interpersonal relationships effectively at all levels and work collaboratively within a diverse team
