Job Introduction

The Publicist will deliver communications and events activity across the BBC England Communications team, including but not limited to BBC Sport, BBC Children's & Education and BBC Breakfast. This is a fascinating role for a creative and enthusiastic comms professional with a passion for TV. You will be interested in social and digital media and the new ways the BBC is seeking to make its high quality content available to audiences.

You will deliver a full range of communications in the team whilst managing your own projects, organising events and creating publicity stunts to create local/regional/national awareness of BBC content.

There will be a requirement for out of hours working along with some UK travel.

Role Responsibility

As the Publicist you will work on projects, to create and implement 360 degree communications campaigns, agreed with the relevant head of comms

  • To constantly seek innovative ways to increase favourable media coverage
  • To establish and maintain effective working relationships and contacts with the media
  • To establish and maintain effective working relationships with BBC production departments, independent production companies, talent, their agents and representatives, ensuring that any press and publicity activities are consistent with the overall communications strategy and priorities for a particular genre or service
  • To work closely with colleagues in pictures, marketing and audiences in order to ensure the effective integration of activities and to maximize the impact of campaigns
  • Write, edit and produce creative and engaging content for communications channels
  • Anticipate and manage issues with a potentially negative impact and handle reactive issues as required.
  • To play an active role in helping to achieve the strategic aims of the whole division by contributing ideas and working towards common goals

The Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • A good understanding of the media environment including radio, television, print, social and digital
  • A good news sense with ability to write crisp, clear, engaging and accurate press releases and copy, which stimulates both press and public interest
  • Excellent and proven creativity - the ability to think laterally and outside the box, together with a hunger to constantly try new ideas and approaches
  • Excellent IT skills, with the ability to adapt to new IT systems
  • A level of interpersonal skills sufficient to enable the post holder to establish and maintain credibility and effective working relationships with a wide range of contacts - journalists, artists, senior managers, broadcasters and editorial staff
  • An interest in and passion for the relevant BBC content, particularly any specialist understanding or experience, is preferable
  • A good working knowledge and use of social media for promoting content and news stories
  • Proven experience of organising and managing events
  • First class administration and organisational skills
  • A collaborative team player with strong communication skills and a positive can-do attitude
  • Experience of managing projects from start to completion
  • Confident, tenacious and able to work on own initiative

Band:  C
Contract type:  Four month fixed-term contract to 30 September 2022
Location:   Salford-based role with some flexibility, ie hybrid working
