Job Introduction

BBC Cymru Wales is the national broadcaster of Wales, providing a wide range of English and Welsh language programming and output for audiences on television, radio and online.  Its national TV programming for Wales is available on BBC One Wales, BBC Two Wales, BBC iPlayer and S4C. It offers two national radio stations, BBC Radio Wales in English and BBC Radio Cymru in Welsh, and two distinct websites. It is also responsible for a significant volume of network programming across TV, Radio and Online, including programmes such as Doctor Who, Crimewatch and Casualty. BBC Cymru Wales is also home of the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales.

This diversity across many different strands of TV Radio and Online output enables work experience students a unique opportunity to experience the BBC across a wide range of genres and platforms.

BBC Cymru Wales employs around 1200 staff, the majority in sites in Cardiff and Cardiff Bay, but also in other locations across Wales including Bangor, Wrexham, Aberystwyth and Carmarthen.

Role Responsibility

These placements provide a “taster” experience of working within the BBC and broadcasting industry. It is aimed at individuals who want to work in the media and would like to find out more about the range of jobs potentially available. Candidates will have the opportunity to see television, radio and online production at first hand.  Candidates will have the chance to spend time with those who produce and co-ordinate the output as well as the craft specialists who capture and post-produce it, along with the staff that provide engineering and IT support across all aspects of programme making and transmission. 

The Ideal Candidate

We're looking for applicants with a demonstrable interest either in Radio, Television or Online programme making and broadcasting.

Candidates should have good interpersonal and communication skills, be creative, adaptable and highly motivated. The ability to work well in a busy team is crucial. As well as needing an interest in broadcasting, candidates should have an awareness of BBC Wales and its local output.

Programme-making can be hectic and unpredictable and applicants should be confident that they will work well in such an environment.  The successful candidate should be prepared to ask lots of questions and contribute ideas.

We have placements available in the following areas:

BBC Bangor Taster Week (open to applicants 14 and over)

Spend a week shadowing a variety of departments in Bangor – to include programmes produced for Radio Cymru, news material for radio, television and online and the technical aspects of production. It is an ideal opportunity to see the breadth of work carried out in Bangor.

BBC Trust (Cardiff - over 18)

Successful candidates may work with the BBC Audience Council Wales and the BBC National Trustee for Wales. The placement may involve helping to plan and organise the audience outreach of the team in Cardiff.

Crimewatch (Cardiff - over 18)

You will get the opportunity to see the entire production process assisting the production team to produce the reconstruction films as well as helping them to prepare for the studio broadcast and assisting on the studio floor during the live transmission.

Cardiff Newsroom (over 18)

The placement would involve spending time in the Cardiff Newsroom where teams produce output for the BBC on TV, Radio and Online.  The candidate will be primarily based with the Newsgathering team and may have the opportunity to research, write and find guests for programmes observe how programmes get to air and spend time with operational staff and reporters.

Factual and Music (Cardiff - over 18)

Factual and Music would like to encourage as diverse a mix of applicants as possible. You will get the opportunity to work with one or more teams producing a range of local and network programmes for television and radio. Projects include returning strands, for example Bargain Hunt, Xray, Weatherman Walking, Crimewatch, BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, BBC Young Musician, Composer of the Week and The Choir,  as well as one-off commissions, for example music documentaries, Radio 4 documentary Features, and Daytime series. Successful candidates may be able to assist with research, organising shoots, working on location, logging footage and other general production duties. This is a great role for someone who wants to get a range of experience in factual programme making.

Fugitives: Home and Abroad (Cardiff - over 18)

The successful candidate will gain experience on an exciting new crime programme following police forces in the UK and abroad, as they track down criminals on the run.  During your placement you would observe and assist with many aspects of the production process, including research, filming on location, logging footage and fact-checking.  This is a great opportunity for someone interested in a career in journalism or film-making.   

X-Ray (Cardiff - over 18)

The X-ray team makes two series of consumer programmes a year for BBC Wales.   You will learn how consumer journalism works, as well as getting the opportunity to do some research and help out on shoots and in the production office.  This is a great opportunity for someone interested in a career in journalism or film-making.    

Newsgathering (Bangor - over 18) 

You will gain experience working in the busy newsroom in Bangor and possibly shadow one of our reporters as they gather material for radio, television and online for BBC Cymru Wales. There may also be a chance to see how a live Welsh language radio programme is produced. The placement will be for one week. The ability to speak Welsh is not essential but candidates need to be aware that the majority of the radio programmes produced are for Radio Cymru.

News and Radio Production (Wrexham - over 18) 

Successful candidates will experience working in the busy newsroom in Bangor and possibly shadow one of our reporters as they gather material for radio, television and online for BBC Cymru Wales. There may also be a chance to see how a live Welsh language radio programme is produced. The placement will be for one week. The ability to speak Welsh is not essential but candidates need to be aware that the majority of the radio programmes produced are for Radio Cymru.

Radio Cymru (Bangor - over 16 & Fluent in Welsh)

Gain an opportunity to observe and work on all types of programmes as for Bangor above, and you will also be able to experience the technical aspects of editing programmes on the latest high-tech systems which are in use here in Radio Cymru.

Radio Cymru (Cardiff - over 16 & Fluent in Welsh) 

Successful candidates will get the opportunity to observe and work and on all types of programmes, including Tudur Owen’s programme, C2 Lisa Gwilym, Dylan Jones’ programme, Post Prynhawn, light entertainment and drama, and experience the technical aspects of editing programmes on the latest high-tech systems which are in use here in Radio Cymru. The placement will be for 1 week.

Radio Wales (Cardiff - Over 18)

Successful candidates may spend a week being involved in the production process for Jason Mohammad's mid-morning show, Eleri Sion's afternoon show and some of the station's weekend programmes.

Operations – Studio & O.B.’s, Post Production, Radio, Multi-skilled Operations, TV Presentation and Graphics (Cardiff – over 18)

Successful candidates may gain practical experience of the work undertaken in Operations in any of the above departments which includes Camera work, Vision Mixing, Scenic, Electrical, Sound, Editing, Graphics, Multi-Skilled Operations and TV Presentation.

Technology, Radio Audio, filming and editing for TV (Bangor – over 18)

Successful candidates will gain practical experience of the work done in the 3 departments in Bangor. The technology team ensures that all the necessary kit required for broadcast is in working order, the audio team edit and help broadcast radio programmes and the multi-skilled operators in news film and edit material for our TV

Week In Week Out (Cardiff – over 18)

You could help to contribute to the production of hard hitting, investigative programmes and gain a real insight into how a half hour story/investigation is put together. It would be an opportunity to learn how we find stories and make them into half hour current affairs programmes. You could learn invaluable investigative techniques and skills which will help in all aspects of research.  You may also have the opportunity to go out with the team on location filming and sit in on an edit.

We offer two types of placement:

Office-based placements - for successful applicants aged 14 and over. 

Placements for successful applicants aged 18 and over. These are likely to include assignments outside the office environment.
