As part of the Watches brand, Springwatch has come to represent the home of UK wildlife output on BBC 2, with a reputation for topicality, storytelling and rigorous scientific reporting, and we are looking for an experienced and highly motivated researcher to join the Springwatch team.
This is a chance to help shape the wildlife editorial on this highly successful live natural history series, delivering a live television event complete with web content and audience contributions.
The successful applicant will need to demonstrate strong editorial skills; coming up with and developing new ideas, setting up and going on shoots, working closely with talent and contributors collecting and collating new scientific research by building links with well-established academic projects.
Knowledge of UK wildlife is essential, but more importantly we are looking for candidates who want to share that passion; who want to engage our existing audience in new and challenging ways, while also reaching out and bringing new audiences to the ‘Watches’ brand and a love of British wildlife.
To support Springwatch producers by undertaking independent research into all aspects of UK wildlife, with a view to compiling comprehensive notes for presenters and helping to plan Live TV content.
To maintain and build upon existing relationships with key scientists and research projects in the field of British natural history as well as with a range of key wildlife partners across the UK.
To evaluate information and material and present it to the series producer and wildlife producers in an appropriate form.
To assist in assembling and processing programme material including some VT scripting and offline video editing.
To work with contributors, scientists and wildlife partners on location during filming and recces.
Evaluate research in terms of programme aims and intentions, make preliminary selections and present findings either verbally or in writing to the producer. As required, to view archive material, select relevant sections and arrange viewing facilities for the producer.
Take responsibility for delivering to the tight deadlines dictated by a live series while maintaining the highest journalistic standards.
Suggest strong stories and offer creative and compelling ways of presenting research material within the programme, whilst sticking to the agreed programme brief.
Contribute ideas for new series and programmes.
The Ideal Candidate
Proven expertise in the natural sciences and a knowledge of UK wildlife.
Experience as a television researcher and/or a track record in journalism in other media.
Good understanding of television production techniques and procedures.
Strong analytical thinking and the ability to assess complex information to provide accurate and engaging summaries of research
Experience of working effectively with a team - able to demonstrate judgement on appropriate referral of issues to more experienced members of the production team.
Experience of working on location would be an advantage.
Good communication skills and the ability to establish positive working relations with a wide range of contacts
Understanding of editorial policy requirements, safety regulations, statutory requirements relevant to programme making.
