Safeguarding Governance & Compliance Manager

Job Introduction

The BBC SSR Group exists to help get programmes made for TV, Radio and On-Line: by finding safe and healthy ways to enable the creation of the distinctive and world-class content that our audiences demand; by ensuring that our people, productions and premises remain secure and on air.

We are now looking for a Safeguarding, Governance & Compliance Manager to focus on building the Safeguarding team to become a central second line assurance function, taking responsibility for risk management, mitigation and assurance of all aspects of safeguarding across the BBC Group, and embedding a framework model to ensure all children on on our internal and collaborative productions are properly safeguarded from any risk. 

Role Responsibility

Main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Own the reporting mechanism for BBC Safeguarding functions, to produce high quality quarterly metrics, annual reports, risk registers and reviews of key risk controls
  • Conduct assurance visits to third parties and provide post visit reports to  senior management
  • Develop and maintain Safeguarding databases to ensure that all content is easily accessible and supports current guidance
  • Conduct periodic assurance visits and produce a compliance report
  • Ensure Safeguarding processes and practices are being maintained by third parties/indies
  • Be the senior point of escalation for high level Child Protection & Safeguarding investigations, where the Safeguarding Operational Lead requires managerial support
  • Chair the Safeguarding Steering Group at Divisional and central level, and participate as needed in at other steering group and Working With Children advisor meetings
  • Champion child protection and safeguarding networks with external broadcaster and other industry partner, both in the UK and internationally, showcasing best practice and shared
  • learning opportunities.
  • Be the BBC’s point of contact with external regulators and Safeguarding specialists

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for somebody with the following skills and experiences:

  • Ability to drive strategic vision and change in terms of a proactive response to Safeguarding Governance at the BBC, specifically in relation the conceptual design, rollout and embedding of a Safeguarding assurance process, ensuring a comprehensive end to end oversight and obtain added value to the business with buy in via key stakeholders to maximise 1st line assurance controls at a divisional level .
  • An expert level of knowledge within Safeguarding and the requisite experience to support this having worked across all areas of safeguarding, specifically including complex case handing and  assurance gathering and be used to producing reports and presentations suitable for Executive / Board level. Ideally you will be educated to a masters level or equivalent level of experience and formal qualifications in safeguarding.
  • Ability to lead and embed the internal Safeguarding governance process to incorporate third parties and Indies operating on behalf of the BBC, inviting collaborative and consistent proactive risk identification and mitigation to be operational whilst influencing Safeguarding compliance across the industry, being the BBC’s point of contact for external regulators and Safeguarding leads.
