If you’re interested in  Sport or News and and getting some great practical experience on your CV, you’ve come to the right place.

What we're looking for

We want people who are creative, keen to learn and are up for a challenge.  We work in teams where everyone has a role to play.  We're looking for people who re friendly and good communicators.

We work at a fast pace, so you'll need to be enthusiastic and motivated to keep up.

We take our jobs seriously and really enjoy what we do.  If you're passionate about the industry and are prepared to work hard, ask lots of questions and contribute ideas, you'll fit right in.

Background/Experience

You don't need a media qualification to apply.  You just need to be able to show us that you're passionate about the area you are applying for and have a genuine desire to find out what the industry has to offer.

We have placements available in the following areas: 

News & Current Affairs (over 18)

These placements are offered across Scotland in locations such as Aberdeen, Dumfries, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Orkney, Selkirk and Shetland. BBC Scotland’s News & Current Affairs Department provides local, national and international news on radio, television and online for audiences in Scotland and across the United Kingdom. It provides in-depth coverage of Scotland’s business and politics and makes stand-out current affairs and investigations programmes for the Nation and the Network.

Every placement is different, but successful candidates will get a good all-round overview of News and Journalism across programming, reporting, editing, etc. You may get the chance to watch broadcasts go out on air and understand the production processes.

In your online application, please tell us which particular area or programme you are particularly interested in. Placements in our Glasgow Newsroom usually last for 5 days and successful candidates will be placed with one particular programme or team.

Sport (Glasgow - over 18)

These placements are largely offered in Glasgow.   BBC Scotland Sport are responsible for programmes like Sportscene, Off The Ball and Sportsound, as well as News across TV, Radio, Online and Social Media.  Sports covered include football, rugby, bowls, tennis, shinty and others. 

Successful candidates will typically spend time on a variety of tasks, which could range from office-based research and planning, to shadowing reporters. We welcome enthusiastic candidates who have a genuine and demonstrable interest in Sport.

BBC Design & Engineering, Software Engineering (Glasgow - Over 18s)

BBC Design + Engineering create the products that power the BBC’s digital output.  Teams operating out of Glasgow include BBC Education, BBC Platform Services, and Voice + AI.  We design and build products like BBC Bitesize, the Archive Search and the BBC’s Alexa Skills and Google Actions.  You’ll be offered the opportunity to shadow the Engineering team, see how we write and test the code that operates these products and understand the processes that take features from design into development.
