Senior Camera Journalist - BBC Scotland News

Job Introduction

We are looking for a Senior Broadcast Camera Journalist / Shoot Edit on attachment/fixed term contract for 6 months.

Reporting to Newsgathering Management at BBC Scotland, you will be expected to work flexibly for both BBC Scotland and BBC network news.

Your base will be Glasgow or Edinburgh but you will be expected to travel across Scotland and occasionally overseas. A valid UK driving licence is essential.

Role Responsibility

You will supply BBC Scotland with high-quality picture footage and sound in the field, from which you will edit high-quality packages, as well as select and compose camera shoots for live or recorded news stories.

You will be required to supervise the logistics of field, production and work on location to produce and direct reports. This will normally entail working with a producer, reporter or correspondent.

This role is critical to the journalism and production process. You will be developing story and programme ideas and treatments and will also be responsible for getting to locations with appropriate equipment.

Are you the right candidate?

The successful candidate will demonstrate camera craft and operational aptitude.  You’ll possess high-level camera and editing skills plus an ability to produce and direct VT reports. You’ll have a thorough understanding of television production techniques, with which you will be able to work effectively with production teams and understand their requirements, both operational and artistic.

A comprehensive knowledge of and interest in news and newsgathering is beneficial but not required. In addition, you will need the ability to assimilate information rapidly and identify the key elements of the story which must be illustrated. You will need to have experience or aptitude to learn broadcast standard ENG cameras and mobile-based technology as well as the ability to use live equipment (Vsat vehicles). Avid/Final Cut Pro X is now the standard editing software.
