Senior Digital Journalist (Jerusalem)
BBC Monitoring (BBCM) offers open source news and information from TV, radio, digital and print media in over 70 languages and from more than 150 countries around the world. It is an important part of the BBC's newsgathering operation, with journalists based in the UK and international bureaux, providing insightful content of political, economic, security and media news for BBC output. Our round-the-clock coverage of media sources is also available to a range of users, including commercial customers.
BBC Monitoring is recruiting a Senior Digital Journalist to to lead a team covering Israel, Palestinian Territories and the wider Middle East, based in the BBC office in Jerusalem.
This role requires you to line manage and inspire your team, to maintain the quality, timeliness and accuracy of the output and to ensure the right sources are used to tell the stories that matter to BBCM users. You’ll need to create a collaborative working environment, to nurture your team to come up with original and creative ideas for ongoing and emerging media narratives and to produce engaging and insightful content in a variety of different formats based on the monitoring of vernacular media sources.
You will need to continually develop the team’s expertise in all media types including social media, to pro-actively identify possible improvements and innovations in working practices, to sub-edit the work of colleagues, to develop the writing skills of more junior colleagues and to ensure that all output is of the highest possible standard.
You will ensure that the team’s output is consistent with BBC editorial guidelines, you’ll maintain content on the BBCM user portal, you’ll plan for special reports/bespoke products and you’ll feed into the news agenda every day. You’ll also share BBCM insights directly with BBC audiences, including through broadcast interviews.
Are you the right candidate?
You will have an excellent knowledge of English, Hebrew and Arabic, as well as an in-depth understanding of news and media developments in the Middle East region.
You will have proven journalistic experience, excellent writing skills in idiomatic English, an ability to take sound editorial decisions quickly, a thorough understanding of the current affairs of the Middle East and an interest in international news and media developments globally. You’ll be able to coach team members, provide constructive feedback and facilitate their professional development. You will be able to think up new treatments and formats and to deliver to different platforms and users.
