BBC Arabic provides news, current affairs and programmes on Radio, TV, Digital and Social Media to Arabic speaking audiences in the Middle East, Gulf and across the world, 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The output is modern in style and outlook and adheres to BBC values of accuracy and impartiality. It has broad appeal, free from commercial, political and religious affiliations or pressures. BBC Arabic reaches a weekly audience of approximately 44 million across all platforms and provides one quarter of output across the entire World Service.
We are looking for a Senior Journalist to be based in Tunis supporting our Arabic Newsgathering team. You'll originate and select stories and prepare programme material for broadcast for the North Africa region, offering ideas and giving guidance to senior editors and programme producers. Working with a local TV crew you'll produce items for TV, radio and digital using appropriate technical and production skills as well as supervising the editing of packages/programmes in liaison with editorial and resource staff. You'll play a key role in contributing to the best use and integration of newsgathering operations across English and Language Service teams in the Arabic region. You'll also research and plan deployments including preparing risk assessments, sharing editorial guidance, fixing logistics and overall budgeting.
The Ideal Candidate
You'll need a high standard of editorial judgement and writing ability based on substantial TV broadcast journalism experience. Knowledge of news and current affairs for North Africa, and the Arab world region is essential. You'll need knowledge, understanding and experience of working in hostile environments and prepared to deploy at short notice to hostile areas. Substantial experience in video and digital journalism is also essential, along with strong social media knowledge and skills. Candidates must demonstrate that they can speak, read and write both Arabic and English to an acceptable broadcast standard.
