Senior Journalist, Planning (Digital Team) - Washington

Job Introduction

BBC News is recruiting a Senior Journalist to join the expanding digital team in North America. This is a key planning role focused on developing creative ideas and coordinating resources to deliver the sharpest news and most engaging features, and help grow our audience in the region.

When news of a mass shooting breaks, are you already figuring out where the story might go next and planning how to cover it?

When a presidential speech to Congress looms, are you across every logistical detail and able to develop a plan for explaining the process and politics to a global audience (while making younger audiences care)?

When a colleague pitches a great story, do you have highly visual ideas about how to tell it on digital platforms - are you excited about the potential for radio and TV treatments too?

In a dense policy report, can you see a sentence that’s a story in itself, and worth exploring in an original way?

Are you curious about the cultural trends and conversations happening beyond the traditional news agenda?

Do you know your CrowdTangle from your Chartbeat, and understand how to use data to increase engagement and reach new audiences?

If you can do all of these things - and more - we want to hear from you.

Role Responsibility

In this role you will help lead a team of more than 20 people reporting on the most significant news from the US and Canada for our website ( and app.

Working with senior editors in Washington, Toronto and London, you will plan and coordinate the BBC’s coverage of major news events. You will also commission and schedule analysis and features in line with our editorial priorities.

In a dynamic multi-media newsroom, you will also work with colleagues from TV, radio and the BBC’s many language services to help deliver their journalism on digital platforms.

Finally this role will require you to work closely with senior colleagues on editorial issues and  strategy, so you will have the interpersonal skills needed to build rapport with people at all levels of the BBC.

The Ideal Candidate

To be considered for this role you will need to have excellent writing skills and proven editorial judgement, in line with the BBC’s reputation for accurate and impartial reporting. You will also have a track record of producing high-impact original journalism, in text and video.

With experience working as a Senior Journalist, you will have the talent and energy to inspire and manage others, as well as an ability to troubleshoot and work calmly under pressure.

You'll require the ability to join up the diplomatic dots on US and global affairs, and reflect the differing perspectives of North American and international audiences.

With a deep understanding of the US and Canada - and what makes the BBC’s journalism distinct in this market - you will have fresh ideas about how to tackle big issues, combining smart analysis with compelling human stories.

Finally you also possess organisational skills to plan and oversee standout coverage of major events ranging from presidential elections to high-profile trials.
